Gonna expand my palette a bit with the classic Soviet meal known as “nonexistent rations”.

I want to buy an air fryer. annamarie - you seem to know your appliances. Ever used one of these? And if so, any brand recommendations? We bought a T-fal Actifryer. I am happy with it. It has a paddle that turns, so I don’t have to flip the food. It occasionally gets caught and I have to move everything around. It doesn’t really have what some other people want. Ours has no basket. I could buy a basket for it so the oil drips instead of the food sitting in it. That would be for things like frozen battered fish. But mine is to small to do enough for a dinner anyway. But some brands have a basket to double your cooking area. However, they are really big machines. Mostly we make either air fried potatoes or chicken wings. I have thrown away my deep fryer. The food tastes better, and at most I use a tablespoon of oil. DS and his friends love the food too. Tomorrow I plan to try apple chips. I don’t have a mandoline for slicing them, so have to decide whether to try to slice thin or do wedges. Or buy a mandoline. Lol. I like mine, and it’s less expensive than some. And it’s no-stick.

I made a sheppard’s pie for dinner. And there are no left overs. I had expected to have some for lunch tomorrow.

Thank you!! I actually prefer a more compact one anyway. Want to use it for tempura-battered veggies, pickle chips/fried pickles, etc.

morgan there is no compact size. There is just big and bigger. When I get home I’ll check the Facebook group I’m in to see if battered veggies requires a basket. Some Tefal come with a basket, but at Canadian Tire they cost double what we paid (ours was on sale though). with the chicken wings, I don’t out any batter and they are the crispest and most delicious wings we’ve ever had. Do get a bit mangled from the paddle sometimes.

Ours looks like this - I got it a few years ago as a Christmas present - right now I am using it to make sweet potato fries
It comes with a green plastic spoon to measure the amount of oil
I'll have to try chicken wings in it - I've never even thought about that!
It also makes good home made fries i.e. the kind where you cut the potatoes yourself, rather than using frozen

I think I'm going to order Chinese food for dinner - vegetable lo mein. I like the rice lo mein noodles and can only get them at one restaurant. The other places make their noodles with flour. They're about three times thicker than the rice noodles and I'm not a fan. Wonder why they're made so differently depending on the restaurant. Maybe it's a regional thing. I think lo mein is sometimes even made with egg noodles.

It filled me up, but I can't live without my sesame chicken or chicken lo mein. I really do think I could survive on nothing but Chinese food. My favorite above all others. Could you?

neesy that is very close to mine. But mine has no button on the left side of handle, and two buttons on top. does yours have the basket? For the chicken wings, we buy frozen, raw, no coating. We put spices and some oil.

I could eat it a couple times a week for sure. Rotating between Vegetable Deluxe and Vegetable Lo Mein. I miss veggie egg rolls. They don't serve them at any of the local Chinese restaurants though. I bought them from the grocery freezer section and baked them. There is one place here that makes a Crispy Tofu appetizer served with a light soy/scallion dipping sauce. So delicious!

There is a removal portion but it is solid

I found a picture - if this is what you mean then no I do not have it - but I see it can be bought separately. My only concern is that I have an older model so not sure if it is designed for the newer models or not

I think this emoji is us having a drink morgan ! No cheese for you, sister? Just veggies and beans? Oy. I'd have to drink loads of booze then. for sure. Do you eat sweets?
I'm going to try the beer cheese soup then. I'll do a trial run sometime this week, just in case I'm horrible at it.
doccreed I make something similar to that - I haven't bought the pie crusts though - I get the crescent rolls. Always very good. Definitely good winter dinner.
@annemarie We need to eat healthier too. I'm better about it during the spring and summer when I can grill and get fresh vegetables from the farmers market (I'm a horrible gardener). I have tried cauliflower mac and cheese (the cauliflower pretended to be the pasta). If I had to lose 10 pounds for an event, I could do it for two weeks. As a regular substitute for pasta and rice or pizza crust - it would feel like a penance. Maybe I should do that for Lent. Eat cauliflower instead of carbs. Six weeks - 42 days. That's an idea. Hahaha! Yep - us drinking Jagermeister!
Well, I've been a vegetarian for over 21 years. Within that time frame, I became more lactose intolerant. So I was vegan a lot of the time, not particularly by choice. Never liked milk and eggs gross me out. But CHEESE - oh my, oh my. I read somewhere that there's something in cheese (an enzyme maybe?) that creates a euphoric feeling within the body. Doesn't surprise me. Toward the end of last year I decided to be a full-time vegan. I might be the only person in the history of the world to actually gain weight. (This injury didn't help because I could barely move for weeks). Becoming a vegetarian was the easiest thing ever. This vegan thing has been the most difficult. I'm hoping they start a Fattest Vegan reality show and I can win some serious money! Egad- I just lost an entire post. I don't know what I did!
I was lamenting your veganism! What can you eat that has any fat in it? Where do you get your protein? Take your vitamins. I think I'd be stick thin if I could just give up dairy (right now I'm a tree trunk!), but I butter and cheese up everything. And sour cream, and blue cheese dressing. Buttered toast, milk in my tomato soup. I can't do without dairy!
@dio'Bolic that sounds like a scrumptious breakfast (minus the scrapple, which I might like - I've just never had it)
neesy - I do pigs in a blanket like doc - the Ogre actually made these to take to a tailgate party we went to this afternoon (busy day here for us! Memphis now has a year round football league, I have no idea why, but I'm always up for a tailgate party). I call what you call pigs in a blanket: Cabbage Rolls and they are delish! That might be something Morgan could have - minus the ground beef - maybe use a textured vegetable protein? - rice, onions, rolled in cabbage leaves and simmered in a tomato sauce (my mom always used tomato juice, the Ogre's mom used V8, I haven't made them in years, but I need to - they are so good!)
doccreed - I'm a Sweet Baby Ray's fan too! Sweet Vidalia Onion is my favorite! On grilled pork chops. YUM
This evening - for the soup dinner fundraiser - I made the beer cheese soup. I should have used a different beer. The recipe called for a pale ale, so I got IPA. To me, it had a bitter taste. I made a full pot of it though, and it was nearly gone by the end of the dinner - so either everyone liked it or at least wanted to try it. Tons of dairy in that. A pound of aged cheddar, veggies simmered in butter, 2 cups of heavy cream, goat cheese for garnish. I made these delicious pretzel things to go with. I found some pretzel loaves and sliced them on the bias - like you would if you were making bruschetta - brushed them with melted butter and dashed them with course kosher salt - baked in a hot oven for a good long time - kind of a like a pretzel toast. So good. Went well with the soup.
I'm hungry now though. I wasn't at the dinner. I'm trying to forget about it and drink my wine - go on to bed before I go crazy and eat a bag of chips.

Yes, this is the basket I was asking about. It’s about $30, which I think is ridiculous. So I’m going to put it on my wish list at crappy tire, and hopefully get notified if it goes on sale.

I think lo mein is sometimes even made with egg noodles. What we think of as fast food is sort of dependent on the cook when it comes to Chinese. At our local one they use a delicious red wine rue in the Mongolian chicken that makes it the best I've had anywhere. Tonight we had fried green tomatoes and baked lemon pepper chicken ala my wife. Delicious.
