41). The Haunting of Hill House (2018). Episodes 1&2 (1 hour/51 min.). I've heard rave reviews about this series. Wasn't sure after the first episode, but the last half hour of the second really amped up. But why always, always the animal stuff? It wears on me.
Don't bother with the sequel series, it sucks.

20. The Wind (1986) (FTV)
1986 Euro Horror slasher has an authoress in a remote Greek seaside villa fighting off a sickle-wielding maniac.
Another fine restoration by Arrow Video here, and if you like women in peril, siege films, and giallos, you will enjoy this film, with some caveats which I'll get into later. Meg Foster (she of the amazing ice blue eyes) puts in an able performance and her character refuses to let herself be intimidated by the local handyman, played with manic glee by Wings Hauser. There's a great "touring the grounds" scene by British character actor Robert Morley (best known for The African Queen), I wish they'd spent more time with his character.
After a pretty strong first 35 minutes where all the groundwork is laid out for a creepy thriller, the film squanders a lot of potential tension by casually revealing the cause behind the strange occurrences. Why the screenwriters chose to do this is a mystery to me. So instead of a "whodunnit" the film pivots into a "watch him do it", which is far less compelling. Perhaps the director had just seen Straw Dogs midway through the filming and wanted to go in a new direction.
In addition, the film at times feels amateurish and cheesy, although I have to confess I found the cheesiness to be part of the fun, but at times it was just distracting and silly. Yeah, this sort of thing goes with the territory, but one can't help but wonder if this merely decent film could have been a great one with some script revisions and better direction.

43). Lost Girls (2020). True crime/thriller. Tragic. So many young lives lost and forgotten. Gabriel Byrne is excellent. A murder victim is still a victim regardless of life choices.

Rewatched Creature, the TV adaptation of the Peter Benchley novel White Shark. It is quite different from the novel but I like it. It's set on an island in the Caribbean, where sinister government projects are creating a shark/human hybrid. Needles to say the creature escapes and starts to stalk the islanders. Good cast, great creature design by Stan Winston, overall it's quite enjoyable.

21. The Silent Scream (1979) (FTV)
College students in a creepy boarding house get bumped off one by one by someone who lives between the walls.
Written by the Wheat brothers (who wrote Nightmare on Elm Street 4, Pitch Black, The Fly 2) this is one of those films I'd always heard good things about over the years, but somehow never got around to watching until last night. Stars include Cameron Mitchell (Night Train to Terror), Barbara Steele (Black Sunday) Rebecca Balding (The Boogens) in a Dorothy Hammill haircut, Yvonne de Carlo (Lily Munster!) and none other than the "Doritos guy" Avery freakin' Schreiber in a serious role!
This is a decent early slasher that moves along at a good pace, despite few if any surprising twists, in fact this is pretty straightforward stuff, but it succeeds despite its familiarity. The film picks up more and more as the body count climbs, building to an effectively tense final scene. Without getting into spoilers, one gets the feeling that they could have taken this story in one of two directions, and in watching the extra features I confirmed this hunch--the movie was already being made when they decided between which outcome they were taking. I sorta wish they'd taken the less obvious approach, but nevermind, it's still a fun little slasher.

Meant to quote, hit edit by mistake. ....haven't been sleeping well the past few nights! Lol, like tonight. Just woke up and decided to check in here. Glad I did, and thankyou for bringing my mistake to my attention. Won't happen again. Mods are able to edit posts. I did by accident. Very sorry. Seems like I remember him doing some Doritos Commercials in the 80's or 90's, but back in the 70's he did Fritos commercials. "The Frito Bandito" was as popular as "My Bologny has a first name..." And "Armor Hot Dogs!"....... Or is it that damn Mandela effect messin' with me again!?......anyway! Have a good night. Still enjoying reading this thread so much.

22. Dream Demon (FTV)
The anxieties of a young bride-to-be are making her dreams spill into real life...or is it the other way around?
This underseen 1988 British psychological horror film is often (and incorrectly, in my opinion) described as a ripoff of A Nightmare on Elm Street, but it's far more nuanced and well, British. That's not to say that it falls short in any way as a horror film--the opening sequence was so horrifyingly and shockingly gruesome, I involuntarily broke into a short bout of lone applause. Is that weird?
Actress Jemma Redgrave makes her film debut and gives a good performance as the frightened fiance in what feels at times like a Polanski horror film (Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby). Look for a young Timothy Spall (Harry Potter's Wormtail) hamming it up in a repulsive role as the paparazzo from hell. If you like creepy dream sequences, there's plenty to enjoy here, and you're kept guessing as to what's a dream and what's reality--sometimes to a fatiguing degree. Things are a bit muddled at times, and an odd casting choice for some flashbacks involve what's clearly an adult actress playing the role of a child--guess they were trying to subvert child labor issues. But overall this was a nice discovery with some surprisingly gory scenes.
Yet another great restoration by Arrow Video, Dream Demon is featured here in a Director's Cut (the version I watched) as well as theatrical, with only a 1 minute difference at the very end.

23. Z (2019) (FTV)
The imaginary friend of a young boy might be more than imaginary, especially when bad things start to happen to the people around him.
This appears to be one of those Shudder films that wasn't good enough to find a home with Blumhouse (or god forbid, A24) and it is pretty thin on plot and budget, and comes in at a scant 83 minutes. So, check your expectations at the door. However, it does offer a few decent scares, a couple shocks, but plenty of flaws as well. None of the characters feel lived in, most are unlikeable, even the usually reliable Stephen McHattie's character is paper thin and not given much to do.
I kind of admired the looney third act despite the constant strains on credulity, but more often this film felt like it was afraid to really commit to anything. I can't decide if the bad CGI was a stylistic move (after all, this is supposed to be a child's imaginary friend), or just a budgetary constraint. The film is often more bland than outright bad, it just seems like something that could have been done better. But if you like movies with creepy kids, dark shadows in suburban homes, and a few "boo" type scares, this fits the bill.

A boy becomes trapped in a haunted house while undergoing treatment for a rare disease.
Starts like a Haunted House Horror Movie and left me with a face contorted in confusion.
I love plot twists but it appears without being sewn into the film in any way. This film could have been two totally different films mashed together.

Yes, I reviewed that in 2018, very good movie, even if the ending went off the rails a little, it was one of my favorites that year. If you liked that, try the director's next film, "Midsommar"-- a lot slower and not to everyone's taste, but I felt it was even better than Hereditary. Interesting, i thought Midsommar was garbage. Bad acting, bad directing and bad story. Someone who saw the excellent The Wicker Man from, i thin k 1965, and thought that we should do a similar story but sadly missed out on the atmosphere that is demanded for that type of story. Most horror movies are HORRIBLE today.

It follows a couple of families that try to make it to a house at a lake where the believe it would be safe. It centres around how quickly what we call civilized behaviour falls away in a crisis situation. Then its dog eat dog thats the rule. Difficult to rate it really because it can go either way depending on how it develops. 39. Open Water (2003) 1/5 (FTV) This was boring, plain and simple. A couple goes on a diving tour with a group of people. Then the diving instructor makes a miscount and the boat leaves when the couple are still in the water. Then they are bobbing around in open water with nowhere to go. Sometimes they say i think i felt something. Lots of waterscenes, lots of open ocean but neither drama nor scares. If you want to be put to sleep choose this one, otherwise avoid it. 40. The Haunting Of Mary Celeste (2020) 2,5/5 (FTV) A researcher has a theory of how the passengers and crew of Mary Celeste disappeared all these years ago (about 140 i think) and she wants to prove it. Hires a boat and goes to the spot where the last entry in the loggbook was recorded. Then things start to happen. The title is a bit of a misnomer since Mary Celeste, the ship, is never really a part of the story, just her crew. Ok but not more and it tries to have two endings and so it has not any good one. A few decent scares though.

I like the first Happy Death Day quite a bit, even if it is a rip-off of Groundhog Day, but the sequel, Happy Death Day 2 is horrible, essentially the same movie, a lot like the most recent Star Wars films, rip-offs of previously much better films in the franchise.
