18. The Lodge (FTV)
Two kids get some bonding alone time a remote cabin with their father's new fiance who escaped a dark religious past.
This film is a combination of slow-burn solitude and nasty jarring shocks combined with an indie/arthouse aesthetic. If you like films like Hereditary and snowbound settings like in The Shining, this will be right up your alley. The whole situation is a powder keg but never feels contrived, probably because it at least begins by being grounded in reality, and relatable family situations. This is another one of those movies that I feel the need to talk indirectly about, rather than spoil too much, but I found it to very compelling and dare I say entertaining despite the bleak isolation and grim premise.
There are some missteps here and there, a few questionable motivations and "hey, why didn't they just" moments, but for the most part this film works because we find ourselves experiencing things through the characters eyes and mindsets, which makes the shocks all the more horrific. This is a great example why character and performance matter so much in horror. Without being a "message movie", the film makes some pretty bold (if dark) statements.
4 out of 5 stars. Bob's October 2020 Horror Movie List*FTV denotes first-time viewings 1. Viy (1967) 4/5 (FTV) 2. Night Visitor 3/5 (FTV) 3. Tigers Are Not Afraid 5/5 (FTV) 4. My favourite Vampire film is Blade. Thats an action movie with vampires as the bad guys. For me thats not a true vampire movie. (and i never been a big Snipes fan). That's true of the sequel movie, but the first has a lot of vampire lore in it, and a very cool vampire villain.

40). The Lodge (2019). Rarely do I have the opportunity (or emotional fortitude) to watch films Feef reviews. But this one is streaming on basic Hulu. I wasn't too affected by the atmospheric setting, since I live in it over half the year. And the religious stuff didn't faze me much either. I've known many religious zealots. But those kids. That surprised me. To me, Hereditary was a thousand times scarier, but this was a solid thriller.

11. Devil's Gate (2017)
Another religious zealot horror movie
IMDB description:
Set in the small town of Devil's Gate, North Dakota, the film examines the disappearance of a local woman (Regan) and her young son. Schull plays an FBI agent who helps the local sheriff (Frakes) search for answers. Partnering with a deputy (Ashmore), they track down the missing woman's husband (Ventimiglia) and find that nothing is as it seems.
Decent but could have been better. 6/10

If its religious zealot films you are after then you should check out Red State, the Kevin Smith film.

I saw that one a few years ago. It put the zeal in zealot. A surprisingly great Kevin Smith film. Unusual. Kevin Smith had a great run for a couple of years but the idea tank went dry. I like the first few films quite a lot.
The last Jay and Silent Bob was painful to watch.

The last Jay and Silent Bob was painful to watch. He also wrote comicbooks. Like his films, they started of great, then ended horribly.

18. Zombie For Sale (aka The Odd Family: Zombie on Sale) (FTV)
Korean zom-com where a bite from a zombie proves to be a fountain of youth that can be exploited and sold to locals, but with inevitable consequences.
Does the world really need another zombie movie, let alone another zombie comedy? I would have thought not, but then I watched Zombie For Sale and was happy to be wrong. If you're fans of quirky small town comedy like Fargo, and oddball Asian horror families like those in The Host and The Happiness of the Katakuris, then you'll love this movie.
The zombies aren't particularly threatening or scary, they are bumbling, like drunken vagrants, which leads to some great comedic sequences. The film has great characters: a zombie who prefers cabbage over brains, an elderly patriarch who just wants to go to Hawaii to see the hula girls, his hapless gas station owner son and no-nonsense pregnant wife whose weapon of choice is a cast iron pan, a recently fired company man from the city who wants to exploit the zombie, and a teen girl who has romantic feelings for the undead.
The movie goes from funny to ridiculous to full-on lunacy over the course of nearly two hours, so it's just a tad too long for the plot line, but pretty much great fun throughout--I found myself laughing out loud quite a bit. A nice little surprise and great change of pace!

fushingfeef That El Superbeasto flick you mentioned is a Rob Zombie creation, right? I watched a bunch of his interviews on YouTube the other night and this sounds familiar. (In one of them he was wearing a Svengoolie t-shirt! I've wanted to order one for months. Discovered him only about six months ago. My mom only gets three tv stations and Me-TV is one of them. She likes watching old "horror" films on Saturday nights. Yay mom! )
Yep, Zombie produced it. It's INSANELY offensive but in a good way.

12. The Ruins (2008)
The book is relentlessly grim and this movie is slightly less grim but is a good adaptation. A group of friends vacationing in Mexico go exploring at some ruins and encounter something evil that won’t let them leave. 7/10

41). The Haunting of Hill House (2018). Episodes 1&2 (1 hour/51 min.). I've heard rave reviews about this series. Wasn't sure after the first episode, but the last half hour of the second really amped up. But why always, always the animal stuff? It wears on me.

42). The Haunting of Hill House (2018). Episodes 3 & 4 (53 minutes/52 min.) Spooky, yet not quite as good as the hype. But I will continue. There are so many children to remember. In addition to the constant back and forth between past and present.

A german movie shot in london about the ripper murders where everybody in london speaks german. Directed by Jess Franco but the thing that made me watch it was that the lead as The Ripper is played by Klaus Kinski. The exålanation of the murders lies in the psyche of the murderer which is well portrayed by Kinski. But this is not a good movie. Blood drips and females are nude but the building of tension isn't there. Kinskis performance makes me give it a 2/5 instead of lower.

22.) Housebound
A Horror/Comedy.
A would-be thief (Morgana O'Reilly) is remanded to the custody of her estranged mother who turns out to be correct in her assertion that evil spirits are afoot in their family domicile.
It was ok. Creepy Horror with some comedy punches. The lead actress acting was great also the atmosphere and look.
