Donda - Kanye West
From only one listen, this album has generated very mixed feelings from me. For something with such a chaotic release schedule and that didn't even get good reviews from the preview streams, I wasn't expecting anything necessarily amazing such as his masterpieces like 2005's "Late Registration" and 2010's era defining album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", but I was at least hoping for something good. There is good content on this album, yes. However, it also suffers from over bloating and many songs sounding too much of the same. I mean this album is nearly 2 hours long, and I'll really listen to an album of any length all the way through as long as it's good, but this one got a little tougher to sit through after about 30 minutes seeing that there was still 1 hour and 18 minutes left on the clock. There's a lack of any high energy songs, and while not every album needs those it's quite disappointing that there were none on such a very very long album. Lyrically, I'll have to muse as I've only listened once and haven't had the time to study any of his lyrics (Knowing Kanye, I expect there to be a mixture of very questionable silly lines among the more artistic and poetically talented verses he has a talent for, and that's fine, that range of tone in lyrics is one reason I like Kanye so much) but I will say the 17th and 27th two part track "Jesus Lord" was the main standout, with some deeply emotional lyrics drawing from world politics and Kanye's own personal life and religious beliefs, the verses on this one definitely caught my attention, and I can see this becoming a new fan favorite. Other stand out tracks include "Jail", "God Breathed", and, for better or worse (if your recognize the sample source), "moon".
Overall, it's an okay album, I want to like it more than I do, unfortunatley. It's not terrible, but it's not particularly great either imo. But, it'll certainly go down in history as how to not release your album :/.
5/10

That's a great one too. I was trying not to duplicate bands on my list. The Rush song from Hemispheres is another good one.

Yes, Hemisphere is great.Fountain of Lamneth is the best Rush song no contest and I will defend that statement. Cygnus X-1 Book 1&2 are both great of course as is 2112 But Fountain of Lamneth is THE best 15+ minute song for me Supper’s Ready and 9 Feet Underground are other great ones

If we’re including jazz, “He Loved Him Madly”, Miles Davis’ 30-40 something minute haunting dirge to Duke Ellington is fantastic. Zimbabwe is another great Miles epic
