45 years ago today, Blue Öyster Cult released their 4th studio album, Agents of Fortune. Best known for its hit single, Don't Fear the Reaper, which was composed and penned by guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser while recovering from minor injuries in a car accident, which got him thinking about his own mortality and how death waits for no one. It is the only Blue Öyster Cult album where all 5 members of the most iconic lineup sang at least one song, and the only album to feature keyboardist/backing guitarist Allen Lanier on vocals. Also the album to most prominently feature collaboration with female Punk icon and ex girlfriend of Allen Lanier, Patti Smith, having her do the backing vocals on The Revenge of Vera Gemini, where as her collaborations on other albums were mostly just writing lyrics. Another interesting tidbit is the inspiration for the lyrics of "Morning Final", which were written by bassist Joe Bouchard, inspired by a recent motiveless homicide in a subway station near the recording studio.

The ten songs I like by W.A.S.P the most...
1. Heaven Hung In Black 2. Chainsaw Charlie 3. Never Say Die 4. The Great Misconceptions of Me 5. Forever Free 6. Sleeping (In the Fire) 7. Thunder Red 8. Fallen Under 9. Animal 10. The Real Me
The 80's stuff was a little corny but they really matured and got an edge in 1990, and kept it for the most part.

I grew up with "The Last Command" This is music with soul and true meaning. I was aware of them in the 80's but I didn't bother because there were so many bands at the time, I mean Dokken, Ratt, GNR, Skid Row, Poison, then the heavier stuff like Metallica, Anthrax, etc, and so on. But then one day in the early 90's I picked up Crimson Idol, been into their music since. There's a song I left off the list, newer ballad off of Golgotha but I'll do another of just top ballads down the road.

Ten Best Power Ballads
They're the ones in bold...
Power ballads are funny, I wasn't that into them until I actually fell for a girl, and after that went south, then all of those power ballads started to make sense, I was like... "love bites, but she has crystal eyes maybe I just need a little patience and get out of this house of broken love and write a letter to a friend, because you don't know what you got till its gone and it isn't wasted time to try again. But damn, I might as well be On Mars, all alone again or am I forever free?
See what I did there? Bands in order of the songs I used....
Def Leppard LA Guns Guns N' Roses Great White Warrant Cinderella Skid Row Alice Cooper Dokken WASP

Today is the 45th anniversary of Steely Dan's iconic masterpiece of an album, The Royal Scam. First released on May 31st 1976, the album has a distinctive jazz rock flair, not unusual for Steely Dan, but fine tuned in this outing. The duo and session musicians compose a dark, seedy, but funky and lively sound to every song on the album. This could be the closest Becker and Fagen ever got to a "concept" album under the Steely Dan brand, as each song on the album has lyrics delving into the seedy underbelly of 20th century society, from drug dealers to adultery to corrupt governments oppressing marginalized groups. The iconic hit "Kid Charlemagne" sports lyrics about the rise and fall of Grateful Dead soundman and LSD kingpin of the 1960s, Owsley Stanley, who's homemade LSD fueled hippie and druggie culture in the last years of the 60s. "The Fez" sports simple repetitive lyrics about the narrator's refusal to elope without his 'Fez' (most agree this to be a metaphor for a condom. Safe sex, kids). "The Caves of Altarmira", about childhood adventure and imagination, and its loss in industrial society. "Don't Take Me Alive", murder, intrigue, manifesto. "Green Earrings", from the perspective a jewel thief with a way with his words. And of course, the title track, "The Royal Scam", about a group of immigrants in the early 20th century coming to bustling New York City in hopes of finding the American Dream they've been promised, only to feel duped and mistreated in royal fashion. The cover was done by artist Larry Zox, meant originally to be the cover of a Van Morrison album before it was rejected. Although, ironically, the cover worked way better thematically when found by Becker and Fagen. The dark, nigh dystopian skyscrapers growing twisted animal heads scowling at a sleeping man in his nightmares, perhaps the kind that haunt the dreams of a poor wandering soul in the slums of New York.
To one of my favorite albums ever, happy birthday.

Some people may not like Zappa's humor but it's worse when you can't even tell what they're saying. Every time I listen to a Metallica album to give them another chance the more and more confused I become on how they're the most popular metal band in the world. Ride the Lightning is a decent album, and I like a couple Metallica songs like Creeping Death and Fade to Black. But, their albums are so boring, it's not even like they're too hardcore it's annoying, they're just boring. Of course no one likes Saint Anger, I only listened to it with some friends for the meme of seeing if it really was as bad as people say (it certainly was), but Master of Puppets is iconic, so you'd think it must be a good album. No, Master of Puppets is a snooze, I don't know why they made "Disposable Heroes" nearly 9 minutes long, it was already a chore to listen to after 3-4 minutes! Like I said in the list, I do really like the main solo in the middle of the title track where the tone completely changes, but that's the only thing I liked on the album and it lasts like 20 seconds on a 45 minute album. And Justice For All is pretty boring too, imo. Of course the fact that the bass is barely audible on that album is criticized a lot, so I listened to the fan made bass remix, still wasn't fun. I don't know why I give them so many chances when every album I've heard except RTL is pretty bad (imo imo). The bass players are the only thing I like about Metallica, at least they don't seem like millionaire man-children, too bad the band has a history of treating them like sh-t. Gotta feel bad about the bus accident that killed their first bassist, though, he had a whole career ahead of him. I do know Joe Bouchard was a big inspiration to both Cliff and Jason, that's cool, I read an interview with Bouchard on a time he met Jason after a concert.

I do know Joe Bouchard was a big inspiration to both Cliff and Jason, that's cool, I read an interview with Bouchard on a time he met Jason after a concert. Forgot to mention, most of the content on the first 2 albums was basically stolen from Dave Mustaine after they kicked him out. I get he had alcohol problems at the time but publishing the songs he wrote by himself for the band and getting rich off them without giving him any royalties at all is just pure douchebaggery. And Megadeth ended up having much better and more audible basslines, too. Too bad David Ellefson thought it'd be a smart idea to cheat on his wife of 26 years with a 19 year old he met on the internet, threw both his career and his family's love for him down the toilet. Very talented bassist, too. Shame. I'm not even a big Megadeth fan, but two of my friends are, so situation sucks for them definetly.

God ... you know you're old when Little Richard covered you. I'd argue Little Richard pioneered glam rock. Sure, most 1950s rock musicians had swagger, Elvis and Berry were full of it. But Richard had a flamboyance to him that became a staple of the genre. Berry probably takes the cake for my favorite 1950s rock musician overall, I don't listen to much Rockabilly but I love Berry, but Richard and Holly also have that fun nature to them. Never was too much of an Elvis fan. My Grandma has seen him 2 or 3 times in concert though, now that's something not many people still alive today have the ability brag about.

I forgot Otis Redding died so young, I mean he was alive when that song was the new hot single, sure. But he only had about 1-2 years to covered it when he himself was already performing his own songs. Not Stones related, but also on the topic of artists who died too soon covering popular songs in record time, Jimi Hendrix Experience covered Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band 2 days after it first released. It was abridged, sure, but that's still amazing to prepare your own rendition of it so fast as a constantly touring act. JHE is one of those uber recognizable bands, the namesake, at least, that you can't overrate. Recently relistened to all 3 of the OG Experience albums and a few postmortem live album archivals, I forgot how much I loved them. Hendrix slays guitar but I think Mitch Mitchell deserves some credit for some of the killer drums he performed with him, the drums and guitar and manic pace of Fire synergize so well, and I'd argue Fire is one of the most important photo-metal songs of all time. I'd also argue Fire was the earliest influence of the future Speed Metal subgenere, that and Palisade Park by Freddy Cannon (that song is fast as hell for 1962 pop rock standards. I had only heard of it and Cannon this morning when Albert Bouchard mentioned it in one of his latest vlogs as a big influence on his drumming on Hot Rails to Hell, another proto-speed metal song arguably).
