diobolic, did you really think To Kill A Mockingbird was boring or were you being provocative? Saying that in Alabama will get you scalped, LOL. It is one of my favorite books about Alabama. Have you tried reading it as an adult? I convinced a gentleman in his seventies to read it and he said he was surprised how much he liked it. But as The Deej says, different strokes.
I'm going to read some short stories from my paperback of collected Flannery O. Since Christmas I've read only three. It is thick as a phone book and has a peacock on the cover.
Trying to forge ahead with Watership Down; I like it but not completely invested yet. I want to start The Little Friend by Donna Tartt and hollygolightly is making me want to join her in One Hundred Years of Solitude. Wait, that sounded wierd. You know what I mean.

doccreed That is a gorgeous book! I love Flannery O'Connor. I'm going to thing about purchasing that sometime with my Amazon points. One Hundred Years of Solitude is something else! I've been at it all week and I'm on page 97. That doesn't mean it's a bad book - I'm completely smitten with it - but I have had to go back and re-read and try to sort out names and such. There's a family tree on the very first page - now I know why. It is definitely my kind of book. And after googling some reviews, I've discovered many folks have a hard time with the names and at some point during the book it becomes clear why.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a favorite of mine. All my kids liked it as well - it was required reading for all of them at school. Somehow it was never on my required reading lists but I found it on my own.

I gave my copy of Watership Down to my niece. I couldn't stick with it. It was beautifully written but I wasn't able to overlook my distaste for books about talking animals. I tried. There are exceptions (Cujo, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle), books that I like where limited time is given to an animal's inner thoughts, but it's rare. Even heralded books like Animal Farm (as short as it is) can't hold my attention. I had the same experience with Black Beauty. As a child I liked Charlotte's Web and such, but no longer. Am I a Scrooge? It's not a matter of suspending rules of reality (talking ghosts don't seem to bother me), although that is part of it; I just can't make the connection. However, I do see their appeal and know there are many beloved talking dog characters.

The intelligence of the animals had a realistic backstory so I liked it.

I remember reading an article that said about 100 years ago there was over one hundred thousand lions in the wild, now there's only about five thousand, mankind is like a plague of locusts, we devour everything in our path.

Finished The Cypress House by Koryta last week and started The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion by Fannie Flagg. I needed some cheering up.
I learned a new word that I'd never seen or heard before - stevedore.

I'm half way through a good book called "Where the Crawdads Sing" by Delia Owens
Cannot remember if it was you who recommended this or not.
It's very good and I'm enjoying it - I hate to put it down

Nope, not me, but I am familiar with it. It had garnered some attention online before it was even released. I might read it one day. I think spideyman and doyoulove19 read it, can't remember.
