I was told that spiders don't like the scent of peppermint. I am petrified of them so I've been dousing myself in peppermint essential oil before I go to sleep. I can tell you one thing for sure - mosquitoes don't mind it at all and will gladly chew you up. That's good to know - I have some peppermint essential oil. Think I will put several drops in my bath water - it can't hurt plus it should be refreshing as well.
I tried it once with pine oil - yikes - big mistake - I must be allergic to it as my skin started burning and then became itchy. I'll save that one for the fire logs in the winter - I read that if you are having an indoor fire in your fireplace, putting a few drops of that on the logs makes it smell nice.

If you like peppermint, you should try Dr. Bronner's Hemp Peppermint soap. I've been using it for over 15 years and it's the best stuff on earth!

I'll have to look that one up - I wonder if it's available in Canada? I am not one for much on-line shopping (apart from my King Kon T-shirts). Hmmm - this might be a good excuse to drive down to Grand Forks, North Dakota!

I had to buy it from the health food store for many years. Now they sell it in the natural foods section at the supermarket. I would check somewhere there's a large variety of natural and organic items.

We have the dreaded brown recluses - our back yard is the woods, so we can't keep them out . So I read somewhere that they hate citrus - I use citrus furnish polish, citrus bathroom cleaner, citrus candles, citrus hand soap - my house smells like lemons and oranges. Here's a terrifying thing - if you see what you think is a dead curled up brown recluse - it's not - it's just the exoskeleton that it shed so it could grow. We also use glue traps. We don't leave clothes on the floor. I'm a fanatic about keeping clean and clutter free because of those horrid spiders. Anyhow, my point is try citrus - I don't know how mosquitoes feel about that scent though. Mosquitoes don't bite me - I've always thought it's because I eat a lot of garlic. Eat garlic, use citrus. Congrats to Josh on the pay raise neesy!

Congrats to Josh on the pay raise neesy ! Hi Holly,
I just sent you a message because I did not realize you were online right now [facepalm] - I love the scent of citrus - it's one of my faves. I also like lemongrass and verbena (we bought some shower gel from Avon in that scent).
We don't get those exotic (brown recluse) spiders up here - it is too cold most of the year. Right now it is not cold at all - rather hot outside so I have the AC going.
Think I will go out on the deck and check out my tomato plants and give them a bit of water.
I do find the odd bug down in our old cement basement (the older part of the house which is from the 1940s. The rest of the house [the addition] was built in the 80s). Plus my cat did catch a mouse a few months ago but that's pretty much it for critters.
Have not heard Mr. Squirrel or Mr. Raccoon trying to get into the roof area either (thank God!)
Anyway - I will stay on here a while, then I need to go cool off in a tub full of warm water - see you later!

Hey neesy - did you ever go back to the bookstore for the hardcover of Under the Dome? You mentioned a few other titles, but I can't remember what they were.

Yup - I got it but danajean had said something about bed bugs hiding in the spines of second hand books so believe it or not it's still sitting in a plastic bag inside my Jeep Liberty out in the garage. It's in the back seat and it gets pretty hot out there. Don't know if that would kill bugs or not but for now I don't feel like bringing it in.
I wonder about that - how would bugs stay alive in a book?
They need to feed off of live people or animals (they suck blood) so how long would it take before they starved to death in the binding of a book?
Okay - now I feel itchy - yuck!
It's in the back seat and it gets pretty hot out there.
Lol - I just realized how this sounds - I meant in my garage, not my back seat 😛

Yeah, that's super gross - 99% of my books are secondhand. How do you know if you have bedbugs? Almost all of my books are in a separate room, so I hope any bugs have all starved by now too!!

Okay, I read it. With all the secondhand books I have, I'm sure they were hiding in some of them. But a lot of the books haven't been opened, so hopefully they died. I wonder how long they live - the article didn't say. It gets so freaking cold here for so many months, maybe they don't do well in this climate. Maybe that will be the ONE good reason to live here. LOL

LOL I was thinking the same thing - it can get down to -40 C with the wind chill in winter, so that might be one reason we don't have major bug problems in our areas!
Even though I am not a big fan of winter, at least it kills the creepy crawlies

Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam Where the deer and the antelope play; Where seldom is heard a discouraging word And the skies are not cloudy all day. Home, home on the range Where the deer and the antelope play Where seldom is heard a discouraging word And the skies are not cloudy all day. How often at night when the heavens are bright With the lights from the glittering stars Have I stood there amazed and asked as I gazed If their glory exceeds that of ours. Don't see a Birthday thread here yet, but I know that tomorrow is fljoe0's birthday (AKA wireman on this forum).
So - Happy Birthday!
Hope it's a good day for you

Probably because it's the 4th of July, I'm craving potato salad - and I don't even like the stuff! Good thing I don't have any potatoes anyway. Would probably try to make a batch and it would go to waste.

Would probably try to make a batch and it would go to waste. This must be like yawning (it's contagious?) I have potatoes, eggs, mayo, celery etc. but no green onions - I like mine with lots of paprika on top for a garnish (that's how my Mom used to make it).

I think that's why I don't like traditional potato salad - I don't like eggs or celery. I need to just modify a recipe and give it a try sometime! (Isn't paprika used to garnish deviled eggs as well? That's probably yummy in potato salad.)
