What is a Block ?
I have heard this a gazillion times in movies from the US. "It's 4 Blocks away from here"
All i know is, that streets are typically laid out on a grid plan, so that city blocks are square or rectangular.

From Wiki-tiki 🙂 ...."City block From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to navigationJump to search For other uses, see City block (disambiguation). Diagram of an example of a rectangular city block as seen from above, surrounded by streets. The block is divided into lots which were numbered by the developer as shown in red here and as shown in plats. A city block is the smallest group of buildings that is surrounded by streets, not counting any type of thoroughfare within the area of a building or comparable structure. City blocks are the space for buildings within the street pattern of a city, and form the basic unit of a city's urban fabric. City blocks may be subdivided into any number of smaller land lots usually in private ownership, though in some cases, it may be other forms of tenure. City blocks are usually built-up to varying degrees and thus form the physical containers or 'streetwalls' of public space. Most cities are composed of a greater or lesser variety of sizes and shapes of urban block. For example, many pre-industrial cores of cities in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East tend to have irregularly shaped street patterns and urban blocks, while cities based on grids have much more regular arrangements."....I always think of 'the block' as in the neighborhood where you live. The 'block' your street is on. You know....like having a 'Block party'? 🙂 It's one of those things you're so used to and just know, it can be kinda hard to describe. I wonder how diobolic and @wayoftheredpanda would describe or define it. 🙂

So I would consider the neighbor across the street to live on the same block as you, but I guess that's wrong.

I think it varies, depending on how you think of it, and what you're specifically referring to at the time.....as in concerning your immediate neighbors/friends...then there's things like utilities to take into consideration.
The people who live across the street here are our neighbors/friends on the block, but the City's electrical transformer for our block ( out back of my residence) isn't shard with those neighbors, it's shared with the all the other residents who live behind me on another street.
Our back yards face each other, with an alley running between them the length of our street, Commander osnafrank . 🙂
(...if that doesn't make any sense to anyone....it's the Benadryl talking again... )

But my kid grew up with hearing and using the term 'block' or 'on the block'. It's about urban and suburban blocks. The 'burbs?...going out to play with the other kids on your block? Throwing a 'block party' on a long 3 day weekend, like Memorial Day? 4th of July? Labor Day?🙂

All i know is, that streets are typically laid out on a grid plan, so that city blocks are square or rectangular. Here's my definition:
A block is the distance from one street to the next, perpendicular to the street you are walking on. Basically, If you are walking up a North/South running street, the distance between one East/West running street and the second East/West running street would be a block. A block is the space between two roads.

It's more or less a slang term (or can be used as a slang term), not uncommon here. 🙂
(oh noooo....I just thought of "New Kids On The Block" facepalm ....some of the worst music ever, to MY ears! Just never was my kind of thing. 🙂)

They were married at one time. 🙂 ...I think around the time they filmed "Gigli", or right after that.

So
Here's a new random thought - Andy is much better at deboning a chicken thigh than I am
I'm trying the sweet & sour chicken noodle recipe from Jamie Oliver - should be good even if I am substituting frozen green peas for sugar snap peas
