Seems like a few are on vacation, this thread isn't getting much love. Ever since that Candyman discussion, Today I watched They Live, it's one of Carpenter's cult classics, and its the first film where Piper was cast as the lead. He and Keith David kick serious butt in that film ... and it turns out aliens are among us and only those with special glasses or contacts can see them or their hidden subliminal messages... even the President turns out to be one of the aliens.... a solid sci fi film and Piper surprised me, he really played a solid character despite being new to the industry, and he had solid chemistry with Keith David who has worked with a lot of top tier actors during his career. I don't know what input Carpenter has with the new Halloween films but they did remove the sister angle, and he always hated that angle but the studio forced it on him because they felt Michael needed a motive. So the new team paid tribute by getting rid of what Carpenter never liked. But what is Michael's motive then? Every killer has a motive, especially Michael, he was in prison for 40 years and he gets free and he goes right after Laurie, there's something about her that makes him want her dead, and if its not the sister angle, what is it? Could he be a guy she rejected in high school? We may never know. Still lots of love for this thread! 😊
"They Live" was a great flick, always have loved that one. And I would really like to see it again sometime soon.
The first "Candyman" with Todd and Madsen, was very good. But didn't meet my expectations and hopes. None of it was really like my vision of what I had read. But the movie was more than only watchable.
The Barker short story, one of the few works of his I really LIKED. A LOT. That collection of short stories it was in were all really good. Wish I could remember the title of the paperback I had at one time.
wireman , there's some REALLY good things going on in Hulu lately, hope I get to catch up with at least some of it soon. Been adding a lot of classics and newer flicks to 'my stuff' .

The Barker short story, one of the few works of his I really LIKED. A LOT. That collection of short stories it was in were all really good. I thought the new Candyman was a reboot of the first, I was wrong, read this on Wiki... Candyman is a 2021 supernatural slasher film directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, and DaCosta. The film is a direct sequel to the 1992 film of the same name and the fourth film in the Candyman film seriesSo its a reboot of the second and not the first film, which is what the last Halloween was, so they're kind of copying but that's cool. I also wasn't aware it was based off of Barker's work, now I am without a doubt re-watching the first one. Hellraiser kicked a*s, and I loved Weaveworld and other stuff he did, he just created such a wicked atmosphere and Pinhead ruled, no offense to Englund but Freddy had nothing on Pinhead and his "people". They really made people go through hell, many deserved it though. Which reminds me, Mezco really needs to make a 1:12 figure of Pinhead.

I went to watch the new Candyman but they want 20 dollars just to rent it, screw that. If HBO/Max has it, I have access to HBO/Max on my PC but my bd player doesn't have the app, and I don't like watching movies on my pc.
So I decided to go with the first film instead since I didn't really pay attention to it much when I first saw it. This time I'm paying attention, still have 10 minutes to go but so far it really is good. I think it would have done a LOT better if it had been released just three years earlier, that's when horror films were at their peak with the mainstream, by 1992 however, the mainstream had moved on. Its rare for the type of horror Candyman falls under to have a black lead, but it works very well.
I imagine the new film will be 20 to buy in a few weeks, they usually wait two months after the theater release, used to be six months, so its changed quite a bit due to the fact they know many have a very short attention span these days so they try to move a lot faster and get the home release out before people move on to other films.

Today I decided to re-watch Interview With A Vampire and Queen Of The Damned.
Gonna keep it short for now.
Both are good films but while one is loyal to the novel of the same name, they just pieced different books together to make Queen.
I think I may prefer QOTD because it just has more of a goth vibe, a killer soundtrack, more action, and Louis, despite the fact they got it right in the film, whined too much. I never could take his whining in the novel, it was like, "just go sit out in the sun for a bit if you're so f'in unhappy". Lestat was always my fave in her saga, he welcomed it and while he didn't seem to adapt to the 20th century very well at first, he adapts very quickly in a matter of days towards the end of the book and film, while Louis still roams around dressed like its the 50's. So Lestat was wrong, Louis wasn't the strong one of the two, he was the weak one. He just got off on living in misery, while Lestat was always about having a great time all of the time and had issues dealing with eternal life when things were dull.
I don't know if we'll see reboots but I think 40 years from now, Lestat will be mentioned along with Dracula, but a reboot, its just hard to say.
For the record, I think Lestat is cooler....
But he adapted and became very modern in that story, Dracula, even when they'd put him in the modern era in films, he was still trapped in the past, like in Blade 3, he doesn't shut up about the past in that film, same with Dracula 2000. One of the reasons I praised the video game Lords Of Shadow 2 so much was because he was adapting to the modern era and doing so very well, and its a shame that Konami has no interest to do a third chapter to that story, I'd imagine by now he would be totally modern. But they went back to the old franchise which is beyond dated.

I Love That QOTD Movie it Has Atmosphere or Ambience or Whatever it Called Made Me Believe The Vampires Really was Very Old Ancients an Such. Like With Akasha an Maharet All The Way Back To Ancient Egypt before it was Even Known as Egypt. Plus The Music is Really Cool in it too.
I Love That Part
Where Akasha Snaps an Kills Every Other Vampire in The Club bc They Wanted to Kill Lestat. I Once Dress as Her For Halloween When i was 18 as She was in The Movie.
Plus That Part At The End too when.
Jesse i Think Her Name was? She Get Turned by Lestat maan i Wish i Could do that. If Some Vampire Offer Me i Wouldnt Even Think Twice Seriosly!

Plus That Part At The End too when. Jesse i Think Her Name was? She Get Turned by Lestat maan i Wish i Could do that. If Some Vampire Offer Me i Wouldnt Even Think Twice Seriosly! Well as much as I liked QOTD, it bombed and has a 17% approval rating on RT, the reviewers and the mainstream just didn't care for the new cast and wanted Cruise back. The funny thing about that however is that when Cruise was cast as Lestat, he started getting hate mail from Rice fans saying he was no Lestat and should stick to flying fighter planes, in other words, they didn't think he had what it took to play a character they loved. When the film came out however, he won many of them over and they realized they were wrong. I mean like I said, I liked QOTD, but Cruise was far more the Lestat from the novels. To be fair to those who didn't think he could do it, they didn't really have any reason think he could, before Interview he was always the charming good guy in films, Lestat was really the first time he was a true bad guy, but he pulled it off. Just a shame they never did more films, I mean the saga is longer than Harry Potter and there was a lot of good stuff in the books, but QOTD did very poorly so they didn't want to risk it. Oh well...

Mike Flanagan continues to be one of my favourite horror directors of this generation, along with James Wan and Robert Eggers. I'm halfway through Midnight Mass on Netflix and loving every minute of it.
Flanagan is around my age, and it's obvious he grew up influenced by the better horror writers/directors of the 70s & 80s, particularly Stephen King and Peter Straub. He also learned their best trick: making the audience connect with the characters, so that when the "horror" comes, it is quick and effective, without the need to rely heavily on gimmicks. I've always been partial to Biblical-based stories (the Old Testament where God was more fun: all fire & brimstone, sending angels as his emissaries of doom), and this show delivers. The lead actor in particular is a standout, but Flanagan has a talent for casting great actors in their respective parts. I'll definitely be giving this a second viewing after I'm done with the remaining episodes.

I'm re-examining the Deathly Hallows and Half Blood Prince, and I was right, they don't mention that Voldemort was indeed a "mudblood", even though he wanted them all destroyed for not being pure wizards. I think its very odd since in the novels its made clear that he loathes all the wizards with human parents but yet was one himself, but the films ignore it, it makes his character far more interesting so why did they ignore it? I just don't get it. Is it possible they did film a few scenes where it is mentioned and they were cut for time reasons? Its highly possible.
Alan Rickman didn't do all that much between Hallows Part 2 and his death, but what a way to go, his performance in Hallows 2 is pretty damn solid, especially his death scene.
Anywho, that's what I'm watching now so I'm staying on topic.
I'm actually starting to run out of movies I want to see, I do want to see the new Candyman once the price comes down, and I am waiting for the new Halloween film but hrmm, I haven't seen Gone Girl in awhile and its kinda like a current news story, kinda.

I ended up going from Harry Potter to a Rocky marathon on HBO, well not a HUGE marathon, they're just showing the first three.
Rocky is a solid franchise, the rags to riches to rags to middle class back to rags, the brain trauma lots of retired boxers have later in life, and the inability to let go of that world. The odd thing about the franchise, it made Stallone an icon in the industry, and Talia Shire was already esablished, so she just got an added boost, but Carl Weathers kind of got the shaft, he was in every just as talented as Stallone, I say was because I haven't seen him anything in eons. in short, Stallone wouuld have been a good Punisher, better than Lundgren, and Punisher is supposed to be Italian, so it would have been fitting. But on the other hand, Rambo and Punisher, little too similar since Punisher was also a vietnam vet.
Anywho... I'm trying to think of the next film franchise I'll bother with... I'm thinking the other two Candyman films.. Still a ways off from Halloween kills, well like 3 weeks... but that's still a ways off... right?

I still Like The First One a Lil Better though. I also prefer the first but the second has its moments, like how well she sold the discovery of her daughter, and while the fight between her and Bill wasn't as epic as the fight between her and O-Ren and the Yakuza, his final words gave it more weight. The comic its based off was kind of shallow but Tarantino gave the story some needed depth and Uma and Lucy Liu put on great perfomances, never cared for Hannah, lousy actress, but she did alright in the KB films, but I would have gone with another actress to play Elle, not sure off the top of my head, but there were far better blondes he could have gone with. I root for her in the films but I have no sympathy for her in the films, one has to keep in mind, she was a ruthless assassin who did bad things and just because she retired, that doesn't change that. Also, she got in league with Bill, a known killer, and even Bill told her it was stupid to think she could cross him and live happily ever after, and he was right, she crossed a killer and dumped him, and ran off with his child, so she kind of was asking for it. But again, I still rooted for her because while Bill had every right to hunt her a*s down and kill her for betraying him, she was pregnant, so I felt he went past the line and that was why I rooted for her.

For the record, if a film is less than a year old, I will use spoilers in my reviews, so since I just finished Cruella and its less than a year old, expect a few spoiler tags.
Anywho, I don't have high expectations when it comes to Disney bringing back their old bland characters, but Cruella surprised me. They went with a PG-13 rating, which was kind of a sign that they were going to push things a tad and not go the kiddie safe route, but I was still not certain if I'd like it, but I did. Emma Stone as always was great in the film, her version of Cruella and how she rose up and the twists her story takes throughout the film were handled very well. The interesting thing is, they totally flushed the old Cruella by making the new one, there's no way the new one would ever become like the one from the old animated film, she actually had a heart, she she's wicked and twisted and whatnot, but she actually loves certain people and has a moral code. But that old cartoon is a relic, no point in really bothering with it anymore anyways, be a better idea to reboot it as a live action film and use it as a sequel to Cruella but an entirely different spin.
Actually, I don't need spoiler tags, there's no need for me to elaborate on the twists because while they're good twists, I saw the big ones coming pretty early on. I mean it was obvious the biggest one was going to happen, there was just no way she came from where she came from, so to speak.
Candyman 2021 is still 20 just to rent, so still no go on that, don't expect it to go on sale for keeps until probably half way into October.

I'm re-examining the Deathly Hallows and Half Blood Prince, and I was right, they don't mention that Voldemort was indeed a "mudblood". Correction: While the film franchise didn't go into depth on Voldemort's parents or the fact his father was non magical, it is mentioned briefly in the second film by Voldemort himself. No detail like in the novel for Half Blood Prince but its enough to know his father was human and that he was a self loather. Anywho, watching Zombie's Halloween 2 again, getting geared up for Halloween Kills, just a little more than two weeks to go until its release. I didn't care for Zombie's remake of Halloween but I do like the sequel because its totally original. The horse thing makes sense but I still could have done without it, but other than that, Annie's death and the finale are very well done. But even if Michael appears dead at the end of the newer story line, he'll be back down the road.

I actually watched Dream House Nightmare last year but I was reminded of it today because someone left a creepy note in our mailbox because they wanted to buy our house. That movie is still on Youtube if anyone wants to watch it. It's about a woman who's obsessed with a house and gets mad because another couple outbid her and her husband and then they didn't get it. The scary woman stalks the house and goes trick or treating there with her daughter, among other things. She also pulls really stupid pranks on the people living there.

I watched the extended cut of Fantastic Beasts 2, its like maybe 15 minutes longer, I don't see why reviewers see it as the better cut, it doesn't add anything that was needed. Some think too many questions weren't answered but uh, that's what the third film is meant to do, answer those questions.
Right now I'm watching the Prophecy 4, I always forget they did 3 more Prophecy films after Walken left the franchise. Not as good but the bad angel in the one I'm watching is the same actor who was the Candyman in the first Candyman, and he tries really hard to pick up were Walken left off, just doesn't sell it as well.

The movie was loosely based on the Kathy Rowe case in Carmel Valley, California.
