Welcome to The Twilight Zone
Déjà vu. That’s what first came to mind when I heard on the news that tropical storm Fiona, she of Shrek fame, would pass through—not by—Puerto Rico. And the storm, lucky us, would touch the southwest portion of the island. Where yours truly lives. It had been only five years since Hurricane Maria (my wife’s name as well) struck the island with its category 4 winds. Man, do I remember Maria—in this case, I mean the storm. For several hours Maria struck full force and blew and blew and blew. I mean, had I constructed my house out of clapboards and a zinc roof, it would have lasted less than an hour in gale-force winds. Luckily construction codes here permit houses of cement blocks and armored cement. Which is a good idea in the tropics.
Then the big day arrived, and wouldn’t you know Fiona would pass through as a hurricane and not a tropical storm. To my mind came flashing thoughts of all the destruction Maria (the hurricane, not my wife) had caused and I was mucho worried. Though my family members and I were not in any physical danger, the destruction the high winds would bring were a cause for concern. And the rain the storm was reputed to release was estimated as much as thirty inches within hours of its assault. In fact, thirty inches were recorded in Ponce, a major city in the south about 50 miles from my home.
Now the hurricane is over and in my neighborhood we have been without electrical power for the past twenty days.
Consequently, I have been in such a funk that (except for these lines) I have not been able to get any writing done. And for some reason my reading lately (during daylight, mind you).
Lastly, my thoughts have been in such a whirl that I completely forgot Mr. King’s birthday. Thanks, Fiona.
