This is an epic Southern Gothic story. Stephen King called it one of the best short stories ever written and he was right. It a blend of many things, Southern Gothic, Horror, Crime etc. That's what makes Howard such a great writer, true he's known for the Conan stories, but he wrote a ton of things, its a shame he passed so young, we should have got a lot more Howard stories than we got, but we'll always have the ones he did write. The twist at the end is amazing, those who have read it will know, Howard was the master of that, like a lot of the other Pulp writers. An epic story. Here's the cover of the Joe R. Lansdale comicbook adaption.

Scary and extremely descriptive in language. This story just doesn't scare, it make you feel scared. You feel what is in the house, as well as the feel of forest. The creep factor.

That was a magnificent story. I thought the part at the beginning when Griswell was awakened was so good. Howard blended the real life events and the dreaming together so well that just like Griswell, the reader was not sure if he was awake or asleep.

wireman Howard deserves more respect as a horror author. I'm going to look for some more of his work.
I read that Pigeons was published 4 years after he died.

From Wikipedia:
"Pigeons from Hell" is one of several regional horror stories by Howard set in the Piney Woods of the ArkLaTex region of the Deep South. Other stories include "The Shadow of the Beast", "Moon of Zimbabwe", "Black Hound of Death" and "Black Canaan".

Yep, he loved Southern Culture, especially New Orleans. He used to visit there as a kid with his father. Those stories are all excellent.

Tragically so. He made a living through being a writer, I believe he was a teenager or something when his first story was published. But he became a superstar shortly after his demise. I mean, who doesn't know Conan the Barbarian? Or King Kull? Or Red Sonja?

I enjoyed the story. I have read it before, did we read it together at some point? Anyway, it was just as enjoyable the second time around.
I have a couple Howard collections on my kindle, that I got for only a few bucks each. A horror collection and one that says it is an omnibus, but it isn't, because none of the horror stories are there.
Sorry for being MIA this week. Hubby was sent home from work Tues, he was in direct contact with a co-worker who tested positive for covid. Hubby has no symptoms so far but is under quarantine. He is getting tested today. They said he did not have to be tested but he requested to be.
Anyway, kind of a stressful week around here.

But just because I don't remember it doesn't mean we didn't read it.
BTW, Does anyone have any idea about the significance of the pigeons? In the story, they are refereed to as the souls of the Blassenvilles let out of hell. I was wondering why pigeons and not a more ominous bird?

Maybe Pigeons were common to the area, and the reader would relate, as Pigeons are everywhere.

This story doesn't seem to have been as popular as others on the board ... Ah well, its more of an obscure story I guess.

I totally forgot about this with the eye op and everything else. I've read it now and its a really good story. I dont think the twist in the end was surprising though. I had thought for a long time that was who the real culprit was. Havent read much Howard before. Some Conan story but thats all and i actually liked this better than that. One thing thats left a bit undecided is the pigeons. Why pigeons? Why not crows or some such birds? Why so many? Are each bird a representative of a soul? Did Howard have a thing against pigeons, totally understandable if so, or was it a random choice.

Maybe Pigeons were common to the area, and the reader would relate, as Pigeons are everywhere. I wonder if there is some significance, though. They are such docile birds, it seems an odd choice unless there's a meaning we aren't aware off. I'm going to look for some reviews and see if I can find an answer. The Kurb is curious too.
