16.) The Lighthouse
Two lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.
Not my cup of tea. I admit the acting was brilliant but the film itself was just meeehhh.

Had forgotten it was so full of star names. Mark Ruffalo, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr and Chloe Sevigny. And directed by David Fincher.

13. One Cut of the Dead (FTV)
Low-budget filmmakers attempting to make a zombie movie in one uncut take keep the cameras rolling as they find themselves caught up in a real zombie invasion.
This Shudder zom-com is going to be difficult to review without spoilers, but I will try not to spoil anything because that's a huge part of the fun of the movie, watching things unfold before your eyes, particularly in the final third. The movie is essentially told in three distinct acts, and the first one is actually the least impressive. The first 35 minutes were watchable enough, average J-horror, but had me wondering why I had heard so many good things about this movie. It seemed awkward at times and limited in scope, and the visual qualities were lacking.
In the middle third, however, we realize something new about what we just saw, which puts it into a new light, and we get more into the characters and their motivations, and are introduced to new characters and a wider perspective. This sets up nicely for the third and final act, in which everything that has been set up pays off in huge dividends. There just such a joy and energy to it, I found myself elated that they were able to pull it off despite every obstacle being thrown their way. In the end, this movie is about the triumph of human will, and a celebration of the creative act of movie making, with blood and zombies.
I know I talked around this movie more than about this movie, but you have to see it to really get it. That's not to say this is one of those movies that depends on a big twist that you can figure out, it's just more of a perspective shift than an informational revelation. But you have to get past those first 35 minutes, hang in there until the very end!

33). The Cured (2017). This movie was very complex (to me anyway). I need to rewatch it at some point. I'm sure there are many things I missed. Starts out slowly and then all serious h*ll breaks loose. Such an interesting twist on the zombie front. Wasn't sure about Ellen Page's performance at first, but she ramped it up. Thumbs up overall.

14. 3 From Hell (FTV)
Third installment in Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses" franchise sees the Firefly family on the lam in Mexico, where an old score will be settled.
Full disclosure: I'm a big fan of Rob Zombie's films and this franchise. There's something about the way he melds homemade B filmmaking and occasional flashes of cinematic artistry that makes his content exciting and somehow more relatable. You never get the sense of a big studio executive pushing the buttons, it's as if a fellow fan of the genre made a movie just for you.
That out of the way, I had a great time with 3 From Hell. Sid Haig's Captain Spalding is given an all-to-brief farewell (the actor was already terminally ill during the shoot), Bill Moseley's Otis Driftwood is scarier than ever, if a little bit crowfooted around the eyes, and Sheri Moon Zombie's character Baby, who could be annoying at times in earlier films, is given a bit more depth as the effects of solitary confinement have taken a toll on her already loony psyche.
The movie opens with a "Helter Skelter" style documentary to fill us in on the backstory, and we get a rare chance to see these characters speaking directly to us and perhaps giving us some insight as to what makes them tick. Then it moves on to the jailbreak sequences which while a bit farfetched, propel the story forward with energy. The final act takes place in a Mexico that is reminiscent of Robert Rodriquez and Quentin Tarantino's in "From Dusk Till Dawn", but a dirtier one--you can practically smell the scenery and characters.
Inevitably, one must compare the third installment of a franchise against those that came before it, and it's there where 3 From Hell falls a bit short. Neither of the sequels compare with the original's bold vision, which was less concerned with homage and stylistic imitation, and there's a certain meandering quality to the latter half of 3 From Hell which keeps it from being truly great. But frankly, with second sequels, "pretty good" is something of a minor miracle.

Eli (2019) netflix
I liked this one but it could have been great with a better script and a little better execution. Eli is a kid with an auto-immune disorder and his parents find him an out of network doctor to treat him. There is a great twist at the end. Watch this without watching the trailer or reading any user reviews. 7/10

34). House of 1000 Corpses (2003). Anyone who knows me at all will be shocked beyond belief that I watched this. But I love Rob Zombie's music and after reading fushingfeef 's last review - seeing this is a trilogy/franchise, I wanted to try. Even watching while squinting, with one eye closed, or through splayed fingers, this was WAY too much for me. So grotesque, disgusting, vile. Just NO. The only positive thing I can possibly say is that it had the "look" of a Rob Zombie music video in the cutaway scenes. Good gawd, how can you guys watch these slasher/torture movies and ever sleep?!

13. Hubie Halloween 2020
This Adam Sandler movie is on Netflix. I wanted it to be good! I so love the Hotel Transylvania movies, so I had high hopes. But, it was pretty dumb. Adam Sandler plays Hubie, who lives in Salem, MA and loves Halloween so much he appoints himself the town's guardian to make sure everyone has a good Halloween. Of course this makes him the focus of ridicule. Until people start disappearing and Hubie comes to the rescue. (Kind of.)
Adam Sandler way overdid the voice he used in The Waterboy, so much so, sometimes it was really hard to understand him. The usual suspects are also in the movie...Kevin James, Rob Schneider, Steve Buscemi. Other familiar faces, Julie Bowen, Maya Rudolph, Tim Meadows and Ray Liotta. I wanted Rob Schneider to say, You can do it! at least once, but he never did.
They did go all out for costumes and scenery. Everything was decorated to the nines, I did enjoy that. And there were a few bloopers during the credits. I did chuckle out loud a few times during the movie, but overall, was disappointed in it. Hotel Transylvania (and 2 and 3) are much better movies.

Grizzly (1976) 2/5 (FTV) The makers of this movie had watched Jaws and then they thought we could use that story and then plant in a national park instead. So they have the ranger that want people out of the beach, sorry the national park, they have the shark/bear expert and the one that don't want to follow these advices. What they dont have is a director thats is even close (very far off) to Spielberg or Williams music or the actors to pull it off. (Also it is a bit strange that when try to hunt the bear a , of course, female ranger feels like she has to take a break and swim in the river so she undresses and goes to the rivers edge alone while she knows there is a hungry bear close by) . Needless to say it was a bad decision.

15. Scared Stiff (1987) (FTV)
80's pop singer with a history of mental problems and her son move into her therapist/boyfriend's southern mansion with a nasty secret in the attic.
This movie flew way under the radar for most, probably because it's not a typical 80's slasher based on an existing franchise. Like any good ghost story, there's a dark history and a re-awakening of old forces in the modern world--think more along the lines of Candyman than Freddy Krueger. The movie is dated in both style and special effects, but for me it added to the 80's charm, so this is sort of a hidden gem. Despite the occasional cheesiness, the film delivers a few good jolts in hallucinatory sequences that reminded me a little of the dream sequences in An American Werewolf In London.
There's a pretty decent score by jazz pianist Billy Barber, which is important considering that the music is pretty central to the plot. And despite the lack of big names, the actors do a decent job of taking things seriously even in the face of some ridiculousness. For instance, who really thought anyone would be afraid of pigeons? Things get really crazy in the final 20 minutes with some great special effects mixed with some bad ones--it's like they threw in everything but the kitchen sink to see what would stick, and things sort of go off the rails. You'll probably laugh more than scream, but you'll always be entertained.
Post-script: The generic title "Scared Stiff" really says nothing about the story, and it turns out the original title was "The Masterson Curse", which is more accurate, but probably less marketable.

Sorry it wasn't your cup of tea! I am actually not a big fan of a lot of "torture" type movies because most of them just seem pointless and dull to me, but intense onscreen violence itself never bothers me much. I'm actually more disturbed when they DON'T show things, it can be very effectively frightening. For me it's more of a style thing, and I really like Rob Zombie's artistic sense of style, and don't consider him to be a torture film director. Hey, at least you tried!
