14. 3 From Hell (FTV)
Third installment in Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses" franchise sees the Firefly family on the lam in Mexico, where an old score will be settled.
Full disclosure: I'm a big fan of Rob Zombie's films and this franchise. There's something about the way he melds homemade B filmmaking and occasional flashes of cinematic artistry that makes his content exciting and somehow more relatable. You never get the sense of a big studio executive pushing the buttons, it's as if a fellow fan of the genre made a movie just for you.
That out of the way, I had a great time with 3 From Hell. Sid Haig's Captain Spalding is given an all-to-brief farewell (the actor was already terminally ill during the shoot), Bill Moseley's Otis Driftwood is scarier than ever, if a little bit crowfooted around the eyes, and Sheri Moon Zombie's character Baby, who could be annoying at times in earlier films, is given a bit more depth as the effects of solitary confinement have taken a toll on her already loony psyche.
The movie opens with a "Helter Skelter" style documentary to fill us in on the backstory, and we get a rare chance to see these characters speaking directly to us and perhaps giving us some insight as to what makes them tick. Then it moves on to the jailbreak sequences which while a bit farfetched, propel the story forward with energy. The final act takes place in a Mexico that is reminiscent of Robert Rodriquez and Quentin Tarantino's in "From Dusk Till Dawn", but a dirtier one--you can practically smell the scenery and characters.
Inevitably, one must compare the third installment of a franchise against those that came before it, and it's there where 3 From Hell falls a bit short. Neither of the sequels compare with the original's bold vision, which was less concerned with homage and stylistic imitation, and there's a certain meandering quality to the latter half of 3 From Hell which keeps it from being truly great. But frankly, with second sequels, "pretty good" is something of a minor miracle.

35). Helstrom (2020) Episodes 1&2 (55 minutes/48 min.) A unique twist on demonic possession, but it's missing something I can't quite pinpoint. Another opinion - there's a huge backstory this series is hinging on. Not sure if they're revealing enough with each episode to keep me watching. (One of the lead characters is named Damon. Unoriginal. Little things like that matter to me.)

Seems like i havent seen it since i was a cub (or have i just seen parts of it?) because i only remembered certain parts of it . It does not use any of the rather cheap thrill shock/scares so usual nowadays but maintains a tense atmosphere straight through. Even before the creature awakens it is there.

36). Signs (2002). I've seen this before, but forgot how good the ending is. Slower paced movie, definitely a slow burn. I appreciate this film more now than I did in the past. Possibly better than The Village in my opinion (in the ranking of M. Night's work).

16. Zoltan: Hound of Dracula (FTV)
Dracula's dog is brought back to life and now seeks a new master in America, where with the aid of Dracula's old footman, he menaces the family of a direct descendant.
This is one of those shlocky-looking 70's horror movies I saw on the shelves at the VHS rental places but never got around to renting, so when Kino Lorber made a new 4k master, I took a chance. The concept is a good one, if not wholly original, as Dracula's dog looks suspiciously like the Doberman pinscher hell-hounds of the 1976 film, The Omen. However, the movie isn't as good as it could have been.
What's surprising is that it takes itself pretty seriously, with Jose Ferrer turning in the best performance in an otherwise pretty rote film. And yes, there are evil vampire dogs with glowing eyes that feast upon the blood of the living and turn them into vampires. What else more could you want? Well, some tension would be nice, but there's pretty much a complete lack of suspense. The family doesn't even seem particularly fazed when one of their puppies disappears.
A siege scene in a cabin could have been an opportunity for a Jaws-like moment, with the two men trading war stories, but we are kept at arms length and not given any real character depth. The dogs all give great performances, but it was hard to think of them as villains because after all, they are man's best friend. I kept feeling sorry for the dogs or thinking they were cute when they were supposed to be menacing. This was a bit of a swing and a miss, and for once I'd like to see a remake by a more able director with a better script. Still, the film has some appeal for those of us who like turgid old 70's horror flicks.
Trivia: Stan Winston did the special effects, which are pretty much limited to some glowing eyes and blood gushing.

37). Our House (2018). A few creepy parts. But overall, another visit to cheesy town. Just because you put kids and spooky dolls into a flick, doesn't automatically make it scary.

19.) V Wars, Episode 1+2.
A doctor is pitted against his best friend when an ancient disease turns people into vampires; from the comics by Jonathan Maberry and Alan Robinson.
Not over top awesome, but a good, fast paced vampire show.

20.) The Predator
It`s an entertaining, funny, violent scifi/horror/action movie. Thomas Jane as a guy with tourette was hilarious.
Open up a bag of chips and enjoy the show.

38). Hereditary (2018). Jeezly crow, this movie was freaking terrifying! Incredible cast and interesting story. I was petrified the entire time, and the end was beyond freaky and bizarre. I'd never heard of this film before and I checked it out from the library. Toni Collette never disappoints and Gabriel Byrne is another favorite. They need to make another movie together.

I've wanted to see that one but not enough to subscribe to any service that has it. It always comes up in the best horrors lists. Here are two that are scary as hell and could be true. If you have Roku you should be able to find them. Goodnight Mommy. Dear Lord it is edge of seat strange and keeps you there. Will what you fear come true? Can it end as bad as you imagine? Get the english language version so you can keep your eyes on the screen. The second is an indie film but the best indie I've ever seen. They Look Like People. What if you had a friend who had a building mental problem? How far would you go to help them? Both of these are about mental illness and creepy. You don't know how they will end but you feel that it won't be good. It could be the most horrible thing you can imagine or redemption. You just can't tell with the real sort of crazy. It's balanced too keenly on the knife edge of disaster to tell. Anything could happen with real crazy.
One that is a unique horror with a totally new thing to fear is Endless. Endless manages to make a horror of a thing you never thought could be horrible, but yeah, it absolutely can. A horror that is endless.
