Simple rule: name a song you like, but you don't know the words to, OR know the words but have no idea what they mean. If you think you know what the song may be about, feel free to share your insights!
I'll start: Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues,I know most of the words. No IDEA what its about. Great tune anyway.

Makes me remember when "Possum Kingdom" by the Toadies first came out, knew/know almost all the lyrics and liked it very much. Didn't really think too much about the meaning of the song, the lyrics were pretty much alright with me. Then one day at work a mean hearted little punk helper, about 17 years old, took a keen delight in saying "You know that song is all about suicide." He smiled with malice. Yeah, that was my cheery thought for the day. He didn't last too long at the shop, the other guys had a lot less patience than I did. I got over it. And I still like the song. Now I just remember that the "Suicide King" is the King of Hearts, one of my favorite face cards in the deck. I think the King dies for love.
This thread also reminds me of all the songs I have gotten the lyrics wrong too. Lol, sometimes they're quite different from what you've been singing when you actually get to read the words.😂 For the longest time I couldn't figure out what the singer was saying when he sang the word 'cumbersome' in the song "Cumbersome" by 7Mary3! Lol, made it hard to sing along to it.😁
But, none of that really has much to do with what you're referring to Wolf Bear. I think songs, like your Dylan tune, ought be about what you want it to be about. Maybe.

I looked up "Subterranean Homesick Blues". Good song. Listened and read along with a lyric vid, then watched Bob Dylan's vid with his 'flash cards'. Liked it all. Made perfect sense to me, but I AM a weirdo. I think the song is simply about LIFE in general. I especially appreciated Dylan's word play on many of his cards. That album must have had the lyrics printed out and included in it....the way the old LP's used to do.

"Losing My Religion" by REM. I just like the music. The lyrics are puzzling, aren't they? Apparently the writer didn't have a meaning in mind and the words aren't to be taken literally. Poetry.

"man in the box" -alice in chains- ..........this song has been sorely misunderstood since it came on the scene. i know, bcause i was a 1st to misconstrue it.
"here comes THE ROOSTER" -alice in chains- ...........i know this song is (predominantly) about the vietnam war......but its lyrics can be applied to other historical events and other , more dramatic scenarios & situations........the intelligent imagination just needs to be put to work.

Poetry.-----------this is just one of those songs that quite adroitly touches and affects people in many ways. it has diverse meaning. the meaning is in what the listener/reader relates to, or gets from the song. i've always liked REM.

Pearl Jam makes good music, but I can never understand Eddie Vedder's vocals. He mumbles a lot.

Okay, this is just me being a total dummy. Up until about a month ago, I thought the lyrics in Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville were - Blew out my flip flop. Stepped on a "Pop Tart." Instead of "pop top!" Makes so much more sense now.

"Losing My Religion" by REM. I just like the music. The lyrics are puzzling, aren't they? Apparently the writer didn't have a meaning in mind and the words aren't to be taken literally. Poetry. The REM guys are from Georgia and I think that I heard Michael Stipe say that Losing My Religion was a phrase that he heard people from around Athens use. I have no idea what kind of context that it was used but I think that's where he picked it up.
I've always kind of thought of it as losing faith in something.

"Losing My Religion" by REM. I just like the music. The lyrics are puzzling, aren't they? Sorry doc, don't know the song...
It is REM so not really on my playlist (like I know how to make a playlist)...
But around here if someone "is going to make you lose your religion" vocabulary tends to get rather PG-13ish and possibly some violence may ensue...
My grandma used to say it a lot to me...
Not sure why...
