I Call Them Roly polies Too Sis I Think They Are Cute. I Never Knew They Were Crustacean though that Makes them even More Cute. My grandson called them George. He saw one and decided it was his pet, George. All summer, every time he saw one he was convinced it was the same one. Awww...that's cute. ❤ Lol, reminds me of how my sun when he was a 6 year old used to call all the squirrels that live in the trees around here, "the oscars" (with a lower case 'o') and the one big male that was the dominant one amongst them, THE 'Oscar', with an upper case O. 🙂
lol, He's inherited my strange imagination and sense of humor.

Distantly is correct. Both Crustaceans, like crabs and shrimps, and Insects belong to the phylum Arthropoda but are of totally different class. The main differences are that all insects have three bodyparts, head, thorax and abdomen while crustaceans have two, head and thorax. Also insects have 6 legs while crustaceans have at least 8 and often more. Another class is the Arachnids or spiders. Our class is Mammalia but we belong to the same phylum as birds, reptils and fish that all are vertebrates, that is have a spine that goes from the bottom of the body to the head. So they are as related to eachother as we are to a frog or a sturgeon. That they are similar means in this case not that they are closely related but that they are both adapted to live in the same ecological niche. So called convergent evolution. I knew you would be able to give it all the proper break down, Kurben. Thank you! 🙂 Very interesting like always. ...species...genus...phylum....arthropods....vertebrates....invertebrates.....I remember parts of science class back in 7th grade. It's true that if you don't use it, you lose it. 🙂
Now what i didn't know was that crustaceans had only a head and thorax. Never thought about that before. Arachnids are pretty cool. Most of them. Love your post Swedish Indie. Well to be completely correct they have (they need it to reproduce) but theirs is fused with the Thorax unlike the insects where the bodyparts are completely separated.

I get it....I'm envisioning how crabs and lobsters are made. (lol, taken apart and eaten a lot of those over the years). 😉
Those "Pill Bugs"...the Amarilliidae? I think that was how it was spelled (obvious where they got that name) vaguely remind me of horseshoe crabs....I think they have numerous legs under that shell....been years since I saw an illustration or photo of one.
Speaking of insects and how they are made....head thorax and abdomen...wasps and ants have all parts very clearly defined.
I have often wondered what part wasps play in the world and big scheme of things, they are pretty insects like ants, but I don't know if they have any beneficial purpose. They seem to be more harmful and a bane like parasites such as lice, bed bugs and ticks....though I know ticks are actually arachnids, If I recall correctly. I really like learning from you, Kurben. Thanks. 🙂

Weeeell, it depends on the wasp. But many are predators on other insects and as such have been helpful for people growing tomatoes and other crops in keeping their number down. So in their cases the wasp is a good thing since without them the harvest would have been much smaller.

You never hear about them praying on bothersome insects that are harmful to crops and the like, all you ever hear is the bad crap from their haters, like them attacking bees and aggressively attacking humans. They've never bothered me. I know how to act around them and not get stung. Same with bee's. They are another favorite of mine and so needed, beneficial and loved. thanks Kurbie. 🙂

For being known as one of the famously elusive and legendary criminals of all time, it's weird knowing how easily Jack the Ripper could have been caught with today's technology. Now that detectives can scan fingerprints, and bodily fluids, and have a database of identities and faces.

In several of his murders he must have left the victims just minutes before they were found. Today he would have been caught for sure.

....same here. (Looks a lot like what we have. Must be another variety or something.) Just not so rounded in the lower body. I think. You find most doodle bugs in damp cool shady places, around and under old rocks and wood....They're sort of 'land bottom feeders'. Not unlike crustaceans in a way. We used to love playing with them when we were kids.🙂 I think it's interesting that crabs and lobsters are related to insects. Distantly, I believe. I bet the great Swedish Indiana Jones, @kurben , might know. 🙂 Distantly is correct. I was going to say "I Love You, Man!" but instead I will just say - it's so great to read these descriptions you give
Have a wonderful day

Although a lot of areas of the world don't have law enforcements that take prostitute murders as seriously as others, I'm pretty sure prostitutes were the exclusive target of Jack the Ripper, but it's been forever since I read anything about him. I am planning to read "From Hell" by Alan Moore after I finish Maus though, and although I don't know much about it I'm told it follows a fictionalized story built around the Jack the Ripper killings. So that sounds interesting, plus I liked Moore's work writing Watchmen, so I'm sure the writing of From Hell should be of a similar quality.

It seems like a lot of serial killers that were never caught just had a lot of dumb luck involved, that or law enforcement investigating the case messed up horrendously. The son of one of the top suspects in the Black Dahlia case literally spent his entire life trying to get his dad to be charged with the murder. I've heard of people who hate their parents, but I doubt someone would spend decades trying to get their dead dad convicted of one of the most brutal murder cases of the early 20th century unless they had real good reason to suspect that he was fully responsible.

Los Angeles had a lot of problems back then, during the Dahlia case. Unfortunately many of the same problems are still present. The LAPD had a reputation for being notoriously bad at homicide investigations, the police detectives working the case blamed the media, and they certainly had a part to play in the murderers escape, leaking evidence etc. But to say it was the media's fault is categorically wrong. Although, the amount of attention these types of cases generate is insane.

They just generate insane money over the misery of other people, and turn the killers into household names. I, personally, think single-murders should only really be broadcasted on local news stations where it's actually relevant. Serial killers make more sense to talk about, to warn people to be extra aware to take home security and personal safety seriously. Also, sick people tend to get inspired to do their own killings by how much attention other killers get on the news.

It turns them into celebrities, its a way of getting famous, the problem is that with the modern press and the internet its basically impossible to stop them getting national attention.

@wayoftheredpanda
I'd be a bit wary about getting From Hell, its not a murder mystery, partly it is, but a lot of it has to do with the politics and history of London and its role in the British Empire as well as the history of the monarchy, its very history dense. It also goes into a lot of history into the societies and cults which were prominent in London at the time as well. Its not the type of book you would suspect.

I’ll still give it a shot and if I don’t like it I can always stop reading. Watchmen also had the whole real world politics motif going for it

Yeah, and one of them was a Swede. It is a warning to us not to leave Sweden. One of the victims was Swedish? To be fair, who in their right mind would go to London? Elizabeth (Liz) Stride was swedish. Born Elisabeth Gustavsdotter just outside Gothenburg. For some reason she emigrated to London. Had a parttime job as a cleaner and got the rest of her money to survive by prostitution. A warning to all of us! Avoid London!!!
