Edwardian England......2 shots in the dark: "Clue" or ......"Murder on the Orient Express" ? lol, I'm SURE those are wrong! .......I'm thinking of a Steven Fry movie, he played Oscar Wilde, but I can't remember the name of it.
Nope to both of those Wolf, the Fry movie you're thinking of is called Wilde but that's not it either I'm afraid.

The main character is basically a serial killer, but with a purpose.

The main character is basically a serial killer, but with a purpose. Well, the only serial killer I can think of from around about that time is Jack the Ripper. (didn't he enter into the 20th century before he stopped his work?) But I can't remember a movie that was about him, that might be considered a black comedy.
If not Jack, then maybe Sweeny Todd? Can't recall when that story is set in.
Told you I'm not great at history.
Tell me what year this movie was made? Please?

The movie was released in 1949.

Okay, at least tell me where the story takes place? Please?
(lol, I had to give my fingertips a rest over the long weekend after posting so much with the remote last Wednesday. They were pretty sore July 4th, but it was worth it! Have a wonderful day Notaro.) It takes place in Edwardian England, and it's absolute murder!! Sweeny Todd?
Nope, nevermind. Just see Wolf guessed this above.

Nope it's not Jekyll and Hyde or Downton Abbey. Use the force guys! I can do that!
Was Sir Alec Guinness in it??? Or Peter Cushing??? (I loved that actor, but Peter O'Toole was the best, and Richard Harris was great as well!)
hmmmm.......1949
Peter Cushing would be better suited for a dark serial killer movie...trying to remember if I saw him in anything made around that time. He would have been fairly young then I think.
Dang Notaro! You are GOOD at this! AqoOTBBrEtxQcNfJjaDD
I do not want to give up, lol.

Yes Wolf one of the first two actors you mentioned is in it. Alright! That helps some... THANK YOU I'm thinking hard on this one, I get the feeling the answer is going to be something painfully obvious like "Ravenous" was. I have a feeling it's Alec Guinness....

Alec Guinness, in a 1949 dark comedy, about a serial killer with a purpose, (lol, I thought they all had a purpose ) set around 1901-1910......and the quote is: "poor edith, this will take years off her life".....I think thats what it was, I'll go back later and check to make sure. I feel like there is a clue in the quote. It sounds like a lament, like shes gone through a loss of a loved one or something. BUT......it is a dark comedy......(".....tough like a soldier ought to be"...) I'm wondering if there's a play on words like that quote, or not. Was Alec Guinness a detective in it?

Quote; Poor Edith, I'm afraid all this is going to take years off her life.
Nope Guiness isn't a detective in it.
