These birds have beautiful markings. I have never seen one down here. Only recently did I see a junco. Twice I have gotten close to a mockingbird; on the last occasion its silhouette roosted in a tall bare maple, the sky dark silver and marbled blue, it copied every whistle I offered- my funny three notes echoing back after a mysterious pause. I keep binoculars by the back door. My favorite bird sounds are mourning doves and chickadees.
Has anyone seen the rose breasted grosbeak in your neighborhood?

What a beautiful bird! They don't live here at all, so I've never seen one. We do have a great spotted woodpecker that visits us regularly, they have somewhat simlar colours: (Not my own picture) They are gorgeous too, I have a wooden door knocker in the hallway that looks just like a real one, I love it! I always have binoculars ready too, bird watching is fantastic.

I just lost my entire post! Drat. I love birds! I have maybe seen the rose breasted grosbeak - but I'm not sure - when I saw it I thought it was a red house finch. I love the cardinals best. We have a very possessive hummingbird who runs all the other hummingbirds away. A flock of doves visits our backyard every day. I've spotted those gorgeous little bluebirds, and a couple of indigo buntings. I've seen a goldfinch a couple of times in early spring - that was exciting. I too keep binoculars by the back door and sit outside on the patio and bird watch every chance I get. The Ogre made a bird watching Renee minifig for me

I captured a rose-ringed parakeet on camera yesterday. Gorgeous, strange birds. Strange, because they are obviously not from here; they have learned to adapt to this country after some of them were released years ago. They are so lovely, with their long tails, their bright green colour and their cheerful calls!
My camera's zoom function is pitiful, so my apologies for the "quality"...

That is so cool!
I saw a budgie once that was flying with a huge flock of birds - this was in my sister's back yard just north of Toronto. I'm assuming he escaped captivity and somehow took up with these wild birds. You couldn't miss him - he was bright green also.
(Think maybe it was a flock of sparrows)

That must have been beautiful! We used to have a budgie. He was green/yellow and blue, and his name was Bobby. He was such a sweetheart.

"Chestnut brown canary Ruby throated sparrow Sing a song don't be long Thrill me to the marrow Voices of the angels ring around the moonlight Asking me, said she so free How can you catch the sparrow?"

I know those. Great tunes ......Seals and Crofts there? I think? Yep, I think so. Those are some good 70's soft rock tunes. Taking it easy and enjoying the quiet today. Might turn on the radio after awhile.

I re-stocked the feeders out in the back garden, the only trouble is the Starlings normally swoop down en masse and devour everything before anything else can get a chance to feed, if it's not the Starlings it's the Magpies. I'll also get my resident Robin or very occasionally a wren, I can't get over how small a wren is! Other visitors I get include, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Collared Dove, House Sparrow and the occasional Chaffinch.

I have a male and female wren that sleeps under the back porch eaves every night, all year. They are small, you're right. They look funny with their tails down and their beaks turned to the corner. If I'm quiet enough I can turn on the light at night and walk up to them and they won't get spooked. Once, I woke one up and it turned to me with its beady black eye as if perturbed and slowly turned back to the corner, LOL. It was like a grumpy teenager pulling the sheets back over its face.

That's amazing Doc, I'd love to have something like that going on here but we have neighbours with cats which patrol the back garden walls and stalk the birds, I have a squirt gun full of vinegar that I fire off at the cats whenever I see them on my wall.

If we didn't live so far apart I would lend you my squirrel trap (well actually the bigger one would be big enough for a cat). We got a set of two - one large and a bonus smaller one.
Why are cats allowed to run at large? We have a bylaw here that says your cat has to be kept indoors or if outside must be on a leash.
To get back to the previous topic (songs) - I like Scarborough Fair [Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme] doccreed
I actually have all those growing at the moment, plus some Oregano.
Just realized something - now that we are cutting way back on the squirrel population I guess I can refill the bird feeder without getting it robbed anymore!

Yeah, we have feral cats all over the neighborhood and surrounding woods. They're like the Gangs of New York. They'll cut you. LOL
