Don't know why I am thinking so much about OCD recently, but I have been and wanted to talk about it. I've had OCD for a while and occasionally its really bad. I did go to counselling for it, so its better than it was (though sometimes it can get bad). I think most have got it, but to a certain extent; we all have our quirks. Basically, to me OCD is making false connections; you think: 'Oh, I had better check that the door is locked again.' Despite the fact you don't need to, you checked it not so long ago. Its also routine, as most people will know.
It is genetic for some, but sometimes a thing can bring it about. I remember the actual day I developed OCD. It was the day before an English exam and I got so worried that If I didn't go well, then I wouldn't go to university. And that was the thing I wanted so badly: to go to university. So I did these weird things to make myself calm, not to have the anxiety, but as anyone with OCD knows: engaging in OCD makes things so much more worse in the long term.
Anyway, thought I would do a thread about it.
Here's a good video of Jenny Yip talking about it:

Have you ever read the Novella-"N" in Just After Sunset by SK? edwardjohn Your post brought it to my mind-OCD. I think many have it to some degree. Needing to have certain things in certain places. May you not have any bad times dealing with your OCD
Here is a quote in reference to OCD within the story:
“I have seen many cases like N. during the five years I've been in practice. I sometimes picture these unfortunates as men and women being pecked to death by predatory birds. The birds are invisible - at least until a psychiatrist who is good, or lucky, or both, sprays them with his version of Luminol and shines the right light on them - but they are nevertheless very real. The wonder is that so many OCDs manage to live productive lives, just the same. They work, they eat (often not enough or too much, it's true), they go to movies, they make love to their girlfriends and boyfriends, their wives and husbands . . . and all the time those birds are there, clinging to them and pecking away little bits of flesh.” ― Stephen King, Just After Sunset

Yes, that is so true. Such an excellent quote. I will talk more of it tomorrow or a bit later.

The thing that really helped me with my OCD is a book from Jenny Yip. You can tell that she has OCD herself and she really knows what she's talking about. The thing with OCD is that its connected to a bunch of different things. So, anxiety and OCD are linked, as are fight of flight, for example.
So, many of the tools you can use to defeat OCD are similar to the tools you use against anxiety. A lot of the time you have totake a step back, understand what you are doing is strange and not helping you and correcting it. Easier said than done al ot of the time, but understanding what is OCD behavior is the way to go. OCD is essentially obsessions. You have to recognize that what you are doing is an obsession (like checking the door, for example).
Its such a detriment, but knowing what is OCD is very, very helpful. I would highly recommend Dr Yip's book!

A really good example of OCD and anxiety is in the film The Accountant. Ben Affleck's character Christian Wolff is a great example of a high functioning OCD sufferer. What a lot of people don't realize is that even seemingly very well put together people can be massive OCD sufferers; their triggers can come when no one is around to notice (and judge) them. Wolff's OCD is based in three's. So, he has to do his compulsions (like washing his hands) three times in a row. Of course, because he's high functioning, he'll never do this in front of anyone, but he always does it when there's no one around that could possibly dent his high function ability (if they knew about his OCD). So, because his OCD is in three's: he often has to do things three times, like going in and out of the house three times, etc.
I have something similar, but its fours. Sometimes it has to do with clothing. If I learn something I don't like in a certain shirt, for example, I don't want to wear it. Alternatively, if I learn something good in that shirt, then I want to keep it good because its associated with the goodness. Its a weird, weird thing. But in Wolff I seem to have a kindred spirit.

There are a lot of things associated with OCD that most people simply don't know about. One of the major things is the time you lose to it. The amount of time you spend checking the door or switching on the lights. If its an hour or several hour every day and you're doing it for months, then it really builds up.
And sometimes you can get hit by an insane lethargy. You get so fed up of the OCD that you don't really even want to do anything, or you spend so much time procrastinating online. That's happened to me quite a bit recently. These are so many aspects to OCD, its insane.

….and the horse it rode in on. 😊
You keep on hanging in there, kiddo. And get it out talking about it. We’re here listening at the very least. I’m hoping that getting it out, and letting others know what it is like, and how you feel, will help to lessen the anxiety somewhat. And that may help with the ocd tendencies. Love you Edders. 🙂

Guys, I'm doing really bad at the moment. I could go really detailed about what's going on, but I've ended up just sending a message to Joe about it all which pretty much sums it up.
Joe, I gotta be honest with you, man. I'm having a really terrible time at the moment.
My OCD is pretty insane.
Its not so much the rituals (i.e. turning a light switch off and on), its the mental aspect of it all. Basically, what's ended up happening is that a relationship I was in has ended, and I don't really know how to deal with it. The thing about OCD is the faulty thinking, so you make connections that aren't really there. And its honestly got to the point where I am so distressed that I can't do basic things like even enjoy tv shows or movies or books, etc.
I am going to go to my doctor about it so don't worry too much. But honestly, man, its complete hell.
Sorry for telling you this, but I don't have many friends and it helps me to talk to yourself about it.
Again, guys, I don't have many friends and talking to you guys really helps.

Again, guys, I don't have many friends and talking to you guys really helps. Frank has set up this wonderful MB as a haven to us all. You can speak freely and honestly to any of us. Open ears, open hearts... and open minds. No judgement. We all have our own issues. We are "family".
OCD is difficult enough to deal with, add on the breaking up of a relationship and emotions can run high. Emotions plus OCD and life become complex. Do seek your doctor's advice. He/she might suggest some techniques you can try. In the meantime, know we are here for you. Serenity and only positive thoughts.

Yes, what Lady Spidey said, Edders. We’re always here. 🙂❤️
I’m so sorry you’re having such a hard time right now, and that a relationship ended.
Try to remember to recognize that ‘faulty thinking’ (what may be ‘unreasonable’ or ‘overthinking’) and don’t let it get you carried away. Easier said than done, I’m sure. 💔
Keeping it all in prayers for you. I hope you get to feeling better VERY soon. 💔🙏
