How did I miss reading this story by Dickens? It appears there is a real life basis for parts of the story.
It was written five years after the Clayton Tunnel incident and a year after the Staplehurst rail crash, wherein Dickens was a passenger.
The signalman deals with the technology of the signals, and eventually must deal with whether he believes the apparitions or not.
I did enjoy the story. Really had the "feel" of being there with the signalman.

This is a very good physiological/horror story. The info that Spidey points out about the story having roots in a true event make it all the more interesting. The author describes this lonely job of being a signal man in such a way that the reader can easily believe the guy is a bit nuts from being alone in the dark all the time and possibly having hallucinations. An excellent Dickens ghost story that I had never heard of.

The Signal Man had had some unfortunate luck in life and was working a job that was beneath his educational level. Working this job in the depths of darkness seems to be a symbol for where his life has ended up.
