I found this story quite entertaining. It was also quite funny; the way the woods were playing with the poor Mr Thomas as well. The bit when he takes a tumble over the fence I found quite funny. I'm sure that that was partly Blackwood's intention, as even Thomas seems to find the funny in the occasion until it becomes sinister. I especially liked the ending where we find out that it was actually "dare" instead of "care" that the man instructing Thomas had written then omitted from his letter. That was a very cool detail. Blackwood's a master of giving you that bit of information at the end of the tale that changes your idea of it completely; a tactic Lovecraft would also use. I guess you could say that this is a man vs nature story; that wood was basically saying to Thomas and others: we've been here long before your species, and will be here long after you're gone.
It reminded me a lot of King's The Mist. The idea of this natural phenomenon at odds with the modern world. It also reminded me of the video game series: Silent Hill. That's also got a sinister mist in it, very much inspired by the King story.
Would certainly recommend.

Would certainly recommend. I loved it. As someone who has been lost in the woods, I can related to this story. It seems just like Algernon described it.

Found this story to be a hidden treasure. Really enjoyed it. Like wireman, lost in the Pine Barrens of south Jersey, I totally got the "feel".
Thanks edwardjohn for the next suggestion. Sounds interesting.

Thanks edwardjohn for the next suggestion. Sounds interesting. It may be my favorite R.E.H. story, and that's saying something!
