This is a very good story with a good vs evil theme and some supernatural thrown in.
I the author did a great job with the paranoia part of the story. After Markheim committed the crime, he started thinking about how he didn't plan it out very well and started imagining getting caught while the ticking clocks were going in the background. As I was reading that, I thought Marekheim was going to have a Poe-like character meltdown at the end.
Did the devil show up or was that just Markheim's conscience? I don't think it was the devil because the supernatural character seemed to approve of Markheim turning himself in.

Conflict of good and evil with the development of self knowledge. Agree wireman, that it was not the devil, rather supernatural in nature. This story reminded me of "Crime and Punishment".

This was a good story. Good vs evil...seems Markheim was never a very good person, according to the being that showed up. Started with theft and graduated to murder. And stealing money to play the stock market with. That kinda made me laugh a little bit. The ticking clocks and imagined footsteps and half seen shadows all added to the mysterious nature of the story.
I imagined the "being" as Death, it seemed he was telling Markheim he was out of chances if he didn't change his ways. My little take on that. 🙂
