This was a very entertaining and a somewhat suspenseful tale. I was a little scared that the boy was gone for good when dad left the shop. The ending leaves us hanging as to how special the boy is and if we should be worried about his gifts. Well's writing and descriptive abilities are impressive. The way he wrote the scenes that went from reality to illusion were great.
All of the HG Wells short stories that we've read in this group have been quite good.

I agree- very entertaining. This story makes me want to read more by HG Wells. I loved the narration and the dialogue between the characters. It was suspenseful, and I also felt worried that the Dad might have lost the little boy forever. But there was also the feeling of innocence in the little guy’s reactions to the magic tricks. Just a great combination of emotions all around.
I loved the uncertainty of the ending, too.

I had read some of HG Wells' novels but had never read any short stories before we started reading them in this group. All the ones we have read have been very good. You can go back in this discussion board and find some. Feel free to make comments in these threads at any time. I remember one called The Red Room that was good and one called The Moth. I think there are at least 2 more.

Really enjoyed this story. First thoughts were that it reminded me of The Harry Potter book when Harry goes to Diagon Alley and visits Ollivander's Shop.
