Stephen revisits the dual personality theme but not anything like Dark Half or Secret Window. This is just more of an alter ego to give Dykstra a little extra courage. Not a favorite of mine but this story is interesting in that all three characters are bad at some point in the story. I think Dykstra surprises himself with the sadistic behavior he's capable of. I don't have the book with me as I type this but there's a line at the end about not knowing what we are capable of that sums up the story.

Rest Stop is a typical "what would you do?" story. Something King enjoys throwing at us from time to time. Not a favorite.
The first part is pure character development of Dykstra. We all know how King loves character development. Thus, we became invested in Dykstra.

I actually really liked this story! Its essentially Steve's take on the vigilante type story. Really great in my opinion!

I actually really liked this story! Its essentially Steve's take on the vigilante type story. Really great in my opinion! His description of a Florida rest stop was very accurate. It sounds like the rest stops on I-95 (I guess it would be I-75 where this story took place - I live on the I-95 side). We have two kinds on I-95, large ones with truck parking, vending machines, playgrounds, picnic tables, etc and minimal ones that are basically a bathroom with a few parking spaces. This sounded like the later.

I would assume that there is some kind of Highway Police; I believe that that's mentioned in the story. But no doubt they've got so much territory to police that its impossible for them to be present for an ongoing situation; and that's what makes this such a great setting for this story.

Yes, The Florida Highway Patrol handles the interstates but they have a vast amount of territory to cover so you won't see them at the minor rest stops.
