Am almost certain I have read this story before-- old age! Very similar to "Tell Tale Heart". Alcohol is, like the cat, is an external agent that adds to the plot. The introduction of alcohol as a plot device is also significant because Edgar Allan Poe was said to be an uncontrollable drunk throughout his lifetime. Never underestimate a cat! An enjoy tale, perfect for Halloween!!

Oh crap, I forgot to read this yesterday.
I've read it before, though, and have seen the segment in Tales of Terror with Vincent Price & Peter Lorre--could you find two creepier guys anywhere? I have a very nice illustrated book of Poe stories around here somewhere and will try to find it today because I really would like to read the story again.🎃

Thank you. I still want to find my book, though, because of the illustrations. 😎

Also in this story is the question of sanity. Question of sanity (or the lack of ) is in several Poe stories. Sometimes hand in hand with the alcohol.
The ending is much like Tell Tale Heart where the narrator is almost in the clear but makes an error by not getting rid of the police sooner. Also, both stories have violence directed at the eye.

I think we see quite a bit of Poe's own tragic life in much of his works...especially his poetry. ( .....The Lost Lenore...and Annabel Lee...)

( Definitely a HEAVY drinker, like so many other creatives...Hmmm....maybe remembering wrong, but I thought he was known to also "Chase the dragon". A few authors did. I think he just never got over the loss of his young wife he loved so much. 💔 He was a very interesting man. Sorry! Don't mean to derail the discussion here! )
From Poe's "Annabel Lee" :
"For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea—
In her tomb by the sounding sea."

...um....guys...here is another story suggestion for future reference.
Putting it here because I don't know where else to put it.
It's different and a good Holiday story for upcoming cold winter nights leading up to X-Mas time! Nothing horror or supernatural about it. Just an all time favorite. 🙂
If y'all prefer that I not do these suggestions, that is so way cool with me! Just let me know! Please. 😊
"A Christmas Memory" by Truman Capote, only 11 pages long 🙂.....
