21. Red Water (2003)
A group of oil workers being held hostage by a group of gangsters on a small oil rig are attacked by a freshwater bull shark. It’s not a good movie but it did kind of hold my interest throughout. 4/10

24. The Funhouse
Teens spending the night in the carnival funhouse on a dare end up getting more than they bargained for.
Tobe Hooper (T.C.M., Poltergeist, etc.) directs this 1981 atmospheric scare-fest with real style that will bring a smile to your face. This film delivers all the great seedy feeling of the real-life traveling carnival that we all wish we could have seen but probably never did: leering carnival barkers, hootchie-cootchie shows with aging "beauties", deformed fetuses in jars, and a real live two-headed cow. There's a palpable love for the horror genre throughout the film, and all the right buttons are hit.
What keeps this from being a full-on classic is that it simply takes forever to get going--this is an hour long movie stretched out to 99 minutes. Like a real scare house, there isn't much plot or logic, but as rides go, it's a lot of fun for a while. (This is a recycled review from 2014 but my rating stays the same.)

22. Saltwater: The Battle For Ramree Island
A band of soldiers in search of a secret Japanese ammunition store face off against deadly saltwater crocodiles in the swamps of Ramree Island. Inspired by actual events during World War 2.
In my blind search for a hidden gem on Amazon Prime, I came across this stinker. Obviously a very low budget as the jungle scenes are very tight shots like they just had one set and it wasn’t very big. Possibly, it was shot at the zoo. There are only 4 characters which seems kind of low for a movie based on a battle. As for being inspired by true events, there is a story of a large number of Japanese soldiers being attacked by crudities in this battle but it’s believed to be more legend than truth. Awful movie 1/10

25. Snatchers (FTV)
High school student gives birth to parasitic aliens that attach to your head and control you.
Originally conceived (no pun intended) as a web series, Snatchers feels like the kind of film you’d get if Edgar Wright made a mash-up of Juno, Mean Girls, and Alien. It’s packed with energy and dark humor and bloody effects that are not for the faint of heart, but at the same time has a light touch—the movie never feels oppressive, just darkly fun. This is the kind of movie that uses the phrase “vag-cannon” as a verb (referring to the explosive alien birth) more than once.
Also welcome are the practical effects for the aliens, which are effective and funny, only supplementing with CGI in the background. The already dated youthful dialog and performances feel a bit cheesy at times, and may be a little off-putting to some, but really they are perfectly aligned with the tone of the film. If you enjoyed 2006’s Slither, this almost feels like a fan-made unofficial sequel, at least in spirit.

18. Splice (FTV 3/5)
Two scientists continue to carry out a controversial experiment involving hybrids, despite being asked to discontinue it. They eventually splice the human DNA and end up creating a dangerous creature.
Pretty good. Kinda gross. Hope scientists never go this far with their experiments. It's a pretty good movie explaining the dark side of scientific experiments.

Pretty good. Kinda gross. Hope scientists never go this far with their experiments. It's a pretty good movie explaining the dark side of scientific experiments. I saw that one, back when it came on HBO (I think it was HBO, could have been Showtime). THAT was icky and rather disturbing (had a couple of really sad parts too). And yep! Certainly did have some Frankenstein flavor to it. A sort of new twist on that classic. NOT in a hurry to see it again, but it did keep me watching. Sarah Polley and Adrian Brody are both VERY good, and they were excellent in these parts.

26. John Carpenter’s Vampires (FTV)
A S.W.A.T.-like team of vampire hunters hired by the Catholic church go after a 600-year-old Master Vampire loose in the modern American west.
Finally got around to watching this one and I'm glad I did. For some reason this has been branded as one of John Carpenter's lesser efforts, which I guess it is when you compare it to stuff like Halloween or The Thing, but it's still a pretty awesome movie on its own merits. James Woods leads his vampire hunting crew with the ethics of a biker gang, and he's always entertaining and intense, especially when repeatedly staking the heart of a vampire and telling it to just die already. Ghostbusters, this ain't.
The effects are good, especially the spectacular incendiary deaths the vampires experience when dragged kicking and screaming into the sunlight. Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks) is a stunner, so we can forgive the awkward chemistry she has with Adam (not Alec) Baldwin. This is an all adult cast (not even teenagers!) playing it straight and serious, but there's a good amount of refreshingly non-snarky dark humor to be had as well. Very entertaining!

19. Army of the Dead (FTV 1,5/5)
After a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble and venture into the quarantine zone in hopes of pulling off an impossible heist.
I'll start with what I like: The score and the cast, except M.Schweighoefer. (unbearable as always)
It has plenty of blood and gore, but overall it's a mediocre, predictable, overlong and, ultimately disappointing piece of crap.

27. The Ghastly Ones (aka Blood Rites) (FTV)
Three Victorian era sisters must spend three nights at their late father’s house to claim their inheritance, but a murderous deformed servant has other plans.
This was the first color film from ultra-low budget exploitation director Andy Milligan, who released this trashy piece of cinema in 1968. From a technical quality standpoint this is a terrible movie, and Milligan’s sloppy hurried style doesn’t do him any favors. The camera is mostly handheld and shaky, we can hear microphones being jostled as the characters bump into each other, and the compositions are awkward. To save money on film stock, the entire movie was filmed using “loose ends”, which are short leftover unexposed film reels from other productions that would normally have been thrown out. Thus, Milligan was able to make a full-length movie for just over $10k, which was extremely cheap even by 1968 standards.
For some reason though, there’s some odd unexplained quality that kept me watching the film. The occasional outbursts of gore are hokey but add some life to the production. The actors do the best they can with an awkward script and nonsensical story, and there’s a lowbrow artsy quality that only the 1960’s seemed to be able to get away with. I get the feeling that Milligan was a tragically untalented and underfunded genius, if such a thing can exist--part Ed Wood, part Andy Warhol. If you like the trashy low budget films of early John Waters, give this one a try, but don’t expect much humor, just dark subversiveness.

If you disliked Schweighoefer, Frank, then you're definitely not going to like the heist film, prequel to Army of the Dead called Army of Thieves, which is premiering on Netflix this week and tells the story of Dieter before the events of the movie.

28. Hour of the Wolf (FTV)
A troubled artist descends into madness while isolated on an island with his wife, haunted by visions of his past indiscretions.
Perhaps the only film made by legendary director Ingmar Bergman that could be considered a horror film, Hour of the Wolf is arty, atmospheric, contemplative, and at times horrific. Unless you are a Bergman enthusiast, this film may seem impenetrable and “difficult”, but at its heart it is a simple horror tale that doesn’t always feel like one. There are long quiet takes, moments when the fourth wall is broken, and we can’t always be certain what we’re seeing is really happening, or is a memory, or just a dream. It’s easy to see how this film went under the radar, as it probably turned off Bergman’s existing fan base, while its pacing and strangeness make it inaccessible for casual horror fans.
But, lest anyone think this isn’t a “real” horror film, think of the premise of The Shining: a man trying to produce art in an isolated location, instead lashing out violently against his family, in the presence of apparitions, while concepts of objective reality are thrown out the window. If that’s not enough, Night of the Wolf also has a bizarre puppet show with a real miniaturized human, an ancient woman who peels off her own face and puts her eyes into a wine glass, the random strangulation murder of a young boy, and a man who can walk up walls and across ceilings before suddenly sprouting giant black wings.
This is a film to be thought about, slowly digested, and re-watched—it doesn’t give up its mysteries easily. If you responded well to The Lighthouse, or even better, Bergman's Persona, then you need to see Hour of the Wolf.

"Hour of the Wolf"...
Though those scene shots do look familiar to me, I don't think I have seen this one, fushingfeef . But man, I do want to! Another great bring I got to thank you for. 😊
Yesterday I took some time to check out what was up on TCM.
I got to see 2 Vincent Price (who I have always adored 😊) flicks!
"House on Haunted Hill" !
I have always loved this one!
Then I got to see another I hadn't seen before,
"The Bat" !
with Agnes Moorehead. I truly enjoyed everything about this film. The story, all of the characters, the fact that Vincent got to be a more ...'justified type villain' ! 😊😉
After that I started to watch the Hammer Flick
"Dracula 1972 A.D."
Lee, Cushing (of course those 2 were in it 😊) and Stephanie Beacham. But...I wasn't feelin' too hot, so I fell asleep and wasn't able to see all of it. I'll catch it again when I can.😊
....Everyone! 😊 And Happy Horror Flick Flickerin'

23. Vanishing on 7th Street (2010)
A good premise but bad execution. It's a post apocalyptic story where the darkness is devouring the population and the only way to stay alive is to stay in the light. The darkness is devouring the daylight hours so the days are becoming shorter and the electricity is gone so staying in light is getting harder each day. That's the good part. The bad part is the cast and the script. Hayden Christensen is just awful in this and the rest of the cast isn't too good either. John Leguizamo is in this too but can't do anything with the bad script. 4/10
