I remember reading this for class in high school.
It's a good creepy kind of story that is also sad. It is told from an odd point of view. The narrator doesn't seem to be a single person but the town. The theme of the story seems to be the inability to get past death or the past and move forward. Emily doesn't accept the death of her father and clings to the past. So when she finally got a man, she wasn't going to let him go.

A true southern gothic tale. Hd never read it before, and wireman you captured the theme perfectly. The use of "we" did bring the thought that it was the town talking, not a single narrator. The imagery at the end of the long grey strand of hair on the pillow was perfect.

In this story, the entire town (at the funeral) acts like they know Emily well and care about her but they don't know her at all. There is a line in the story that says Emily was an obligation to the town. She was a curiosity to the town.

As everything else in town has changed, Emily's world (and house) remain the same.
