This was a good one. I had never read this before although I have seen the old movie with Boris Karloff. This is a tale of morality, murder and haunting and it is riveting & creepy from start to finish. There is a see no evil morality to this story. Deep down, Fettes knew what was going on but as long as he didn't see it or confirm it, he didn't consider himself compliant or feel too guilty about it. As soon as the body of Jane showed up, he could no longer keep his guilt concealed. I like how the McFarlane and Fettes are affected differently by what they've done. Fettes has become an alcoholic because of guilt and McFarlane doesn't seem bothered by the morality of what they've done but only by the haunting. The story is a brilliant combination of morality and horror.

I concur, this was an excellent story. I found the fact that the person who started the tradition that Fettes and McFarlane later continued is known simply by a letter, K; to me, its like an unnamed evil, the Devil; he doesn't appear in this story, K. is simply talked about. as this kind of supernatural type entity; he's the evil that is leading out protagonists. I found that fascinating. Again, this is a really awesome story.

Interesting. They sold the bodies to Robert Knox. Maybe he's the model for the K character.

Interesting. They sold the bodies to Robert Knox. Maybe he's the model for the K character. Wow! They dissected him and put him on display. That's justice.
Burke was hanged shortly afterwards; his corpse was dissected and his skeleton displayed at the Anatomical Museum of Edinburgh Medical School where, as at 2021, it remains.

Interesting. They sold the bodies to Robert Knox. Maybe he's the model for the K character. He most certainly is. Knox, as noted in the story, became immensely famous for his part, as did all involved in the case. Many contemporary cartoons depicting Knox showed him as the Devil; quite telling if you ask me!
There's also the fact that Knox went to stay in London not long after the trial, that also relates to this tale. Knox did claim his innocence, much like Fennes does in the early part of the story, claiming ignorance; I fear we'll never know the extent to which he knew what was going on.

Edinburgh justice at its finest. I can guarantee you no one else did what Burke and Hare did after that!

Discussion for today: The Body Snatcher by Robert Louis Stevenson
Yay - I did it! Finally got around to reading the story - that was a bit creepy I must say - I also had to look up the words "CRAS TIBI"
It is so strange to read these old stories and see how much the language has changed over the years.
I also ended up looking up Robert Louis Stevenson on Wikipedia - he had a very interesting life
Wouldn't it be interesting if we could time travel and meet authors such as this, then return to our own time?

Now use it in a sentence. "Cras tibi!"....I will do a favor. 😊" ("Cras tibi ....faciam beneficium!" - if you prefer that one instead. 😊😉)
