This is a thoroughly entertaining and rowdy story with ghost pirates. This story has a good description of life and nature in the area at the time. I read the Gibbett Island in the story is Ellis Island now which is a heavily populated area now. Most of the nature depicted in this story is gone from this area now. An interesting thing I read about Ellis Island is that Ellis Island is where executions took place in the time of this story. So Irving set this pirate ghost story in a place where executions were taking place.

Agree, this was an enjoyable ghost story. The setting was perfect for a story about pirates, ghosts, and the justice system of that era.
Criminals were hung from the gallows, or gibbet, thus the name Gibbet Island- which today is Ellis Island.

I concur with what others have said, yes, its a great supernatural tale from Irvine. I also, as Joe said, liked the local history that the author infuses into the story. Its very obvious from the way that Irvine formatted this work that he greatly influenced the pulps that would follow in the canon of American literature. The whole "this tale was found in a series of documents and am sending it to an editor" is a trope that would become very common. I quite liked the main character so it was a bit, so it unfortunate that he met the end that he did, then again, he was a pirate. I love how the supernatural elements are hinted at earlier in the tale, and how they come together at the end. Very cool story.

Any suggestions for the next reading group discussion? Are we going to start a new book? Is it too soon to do the next SK shorty story collection? I believe the last one we did was Everything's Eventual, so the next one would be Just After Sunset? Or we could do Full Dark, No Stars, I love that one. Or we could do another random short story?

Let's do another random one while we figure out what book we want to do. I've made the last couple of choices so someone else make one. If no one makes one by tomorrow, I'll pick one.

Agree with what you all said, fun easy little read. Pirates, loot and debauchery and ghosts. What more do you need? 😄
