A nice short story, but it left me with the feeling that something was missing, unfinished? In an attempt to find out more about the character Mallon, I discovered that Mallon was also in Straub's A Dark Matter.

I think you might be right that we may need to read the other story(ies) with this character to understand this one better.
What I get out of this story is that it's about somebody (who happens to be American - coincidence? ) interjecting themselves into a situation (or culture) they don't fully understand.

I wasn't surprised to learn from the other posts that Mallon was a character in a Straub novel; this short story seems more like a prologue than a contained tale. I thought it was really interesting, I was loving the dynamic of Mallon and the man accompanying him and their powers, as well as the the events which transpire when they reach the village and the ambiguous end. In my opinion, this story was way more worthy of being further developed than a lot of the other Straub stories in this collection but alas.
