Okay folks, I've started a thread dedicated to the new mini-series. As always, use spoilers for those who haven't yet watched the show.
I watched the first episode last night. It's a solid effort, but the show-runners' decision to adopt a "Lost" approach (introducing a few key characters and telling their stories via a shifting timeline) robs the narrative of the wonderful momentum of the novel. I do like what I've seen so far of the cast.
I'll offer no more details until I've finished watching the entire series. The Stand is tied with IT as my second favourite Stephen King novel (Salem's Lot being Numero Uno). I hope they do a good job with this show.

I agree with you about the timeline. I did not enjoy that either.

I am going to order cbs all access soon so I can watch it, I also want to know that I am new to the stand and am going to have a fresh perspective. I have not seen the other tv show in the 1990’s and have not read the book, as it huge... lol. I think scarsgard will be amazing

I watched the first episode yesterday and yes, this shifted timeline thing is very confusing for people who don`t't know the Book.
Even I was confused sometimes.

And that's the problem right here: people familiar with the source material will know what's going on. Newcomers will be confused or, at worst, become disinterested. You would think that after "Lost," show-runners would shy away from that storytelling format because all it does is irritate the audience.
Two episodes in, and I think the narrative choice will ultimately result in this show being forgotten just like Under the Dome, and Mick Garris's series being the one better remembered.

It simply does not work with this type of story. Maybe it gets better as the series progresses. It's just so uncomfortable to follow and the casting is meeeeh.
So far, this Series is an embarrassment when compared to the 1994 version.

As you're not familiar with the source material, I am most interested in hearing your thoughts after you've watched it. Looking forward to your review.

Thus far I have enjoyed the new Stand. Will it ever be better that the original? M-O-O-N that spells NO. The original Stand was one of Bob Ross’s Happy little accidents, the right people at the right time. Here are some of my thoughts. YES SPOILERS: M-O-O-N That spells Spoilers.
- I questioned making Ralph and the Judge female characters at first, but okay it works and I’m all for inclusion. Let’s be real, the original Stand was a sausage fest. But if that’s the case then why no Lucy or Sue? Not so sure about that.
- Why are all the auxiliary females seem to be blonde? Why did Rita and Nadine look like sisters?
- Why is this story nonlinear? This isn’t the Dark Tower where it made sense to start in the middle, the Stand is a fairly narrative driven tale that should go from A to B.
- This version has a weird juxtaposition going on. At times it is dogmatically faithful to the source (and even the original miniseries) and yet at other times it seems like it goes out of its way to be different. The problem is that you never know what to expect.
- The actors in this are great. I do question some of the choices in the story or the lines given, but as far as the performers the cast is well done. J.K. Simmons as Starkey? Best thing ever.
- Are Nick and Lloyd supposed to analog of each other, given their placement with Mother Abigail and Flagg? I could see it, but if so then drop the pretense and just spell it out.
- The soundtrack is great, I love it and I hope there is an actual album to buy. I bet half the budget went to those songs.
- How is it that Harold is coming off far more sympathetic than Fran? I realize there is still plenty of time to flip this, but so far, I don’t like her. So far, she ain’t Fran and I don’t like her one bit.
- Flagg and Mother Abigail are underused. The dreams are underused.
- The SK cameo was so low key you might have missed it.

I am not liking this new version much. The out of order story telling is NOT working. There has been absolutely zero build up or explanation at all about Mother Abigail representing good or Flagg representing evil. Hardly any reference to the dreams or why any of this is happening, even the plague itself got very little attention.
I don't know if they decided to go this direction to avoid comparisons to the original series...but so far, 4 hours into the new one compared to 6 hours total running time of the original, the original is far superior at telling the story.
There are things I am enjoying. I like the guy playing Tom and I think the guy playing Harold is great. Uber creepy. But if I did not know this story I would feel no attachment to anyone, they just are not fleshing the characters out at all. I am disappointed. I figured with a longer run time we would get more of the story. Not less, and a jumbled up mess to boot.

I'm also four episodes in and agree with everything you've written, cat . This has the potential to be good, but the jumbled narrative makes it difficult to care about what's going on, much less remember anything of note after the episode is over.
I also thought about being 4 hours into the series, when Mick Garris used that same time to tell a good two-thirds of the story in a much more satisfying manner.
The show-runners have made a serious blunder here.

New episode of the Stand tonight. As before, the highs outweighed the lows so I am still digging it. M-O-O-N that spells spoilers:
- Dana. Oh Dana, we hardly knew you. No, for real we hardly knew you. Somehow in with more or less the same amount of screen time in the original miniseries, we got a feeling of Dana and what she was about. The new and improved Dana, not so much. Yes, the actress was great, yes she performed well…but there was no time to grow attached to her. Worst of all, Dana was smart enough not to approach Tom Cullen in the book or the original miniseries…yet here she asks for him from multiple times. I might overlook this, but she gave him a handwritten note. A HANDWRITTEN NOTE!
- Lloyd. What did you do to him? This is real a symptom of ‘New Vegas’ all around. In neither the book nor the original miniseries was Las Vegas a modern-day Sodom. There were gladiator fights, sex clubs, or people doing hard core drugs. Now Lloyd is a coke user that gets impotent the moment someone mentions Flagg’s name. There hasn’t been one moment where it looks like he runs things for Flagg, he walks around in clothes that would make Pennywise be like ‘you look like a clown’ and spends a good deal high. In the book and even the original miniseries no one did hard drugs in Vegas, they were afraid to have hard booze because Flagg crucified people for being users and abusers.
-Larry turning down Nadine. Without Lucy it makes no sense. NO SENSE.
-Why do I still like Harold better than Fran?
-The soundtrack is still killer. I love the music of this miniseries, its pure gold.
-Flagg and Mother Abagail had more screen time and were great. They were perfectly cast, and while I still like the original actors better at this point, I am growing to like them more.

Every episode I watch irritates me more than the last. There is zero tension here. They are not doing this book justice. Again: a waste of a terrific cast.
When this series is over, I wish the showrunners would release an entirely new edit told in chronological fashion.
