One thing different about this story than the regular haunted house (or hotel room in this case) story is how quickly the events unfold. The character doesn't slowly get creeped out here. As soon as he enters the room (even before he enters it), things start going bad very fast. I think he only stayed in the room for an hour. This room doesn't mess around.

Mike gets what he deserves, he wasn't particularly likable before he went to room 1408, believing that the supernatural didn't exist. A lot of the weird stuff which happens in the room is pretty cool, like the wallpaper changing and the carpet being like mud. Also, the changing language menus and the image of the wolf eating the boy. Mike learns to not dismiss things which aren't in his wheelhouse, so there is that. I also loved what happened to his lucky shirt. I believe this story was referenced in On Writing.

The room must have had something going on later that day.

Steve said he never intended to complete the story, it was just intended as an exercise or example for On Writing but he couldn't stop himself.

You can tell that SK hates people who have Mike's mindset.

I think the story also deals with the lasting effects of trauma. The ending portrayed that well. As the reader reads, the imagination runs freely. You can "feel" the room. It bends one's mind. I enjoyed the book more than the movie.

The next EE story, riding The Bullet is pretty long (if my memory is correct). If we want to do that one next, a two week time frame may help.

This is a great little story. Mike enters the room a nonbeliever but it doesn't take long for that to change. I remember the story being a lot longer, and I was surprised when I got to the end so quickly. I think I was getting the movie mixed in there. I didn't mind the movie, but the story does work well as a wham bam type story.
I am one story behind, will get that read soon.
