Robert E. Howard. The master. His love of American culture, whether that be the natives (which Howard expresses his admiration of throughout his stories), or his southern surroundings, Texan frontier, is so cool. This is essentially the wild west/frontier meets ancient Native American supernatural. Excellent. Howard's horror stories are excellent, this is like a Creepshow before there was such a thing. This is very Edger Allen Poe inspired, "Tell Tale Heart" anyone? I liked Jim and Doc Blaine, as well as Jack. Very cool story. I like how several plots converged, which is unusual for a short story, but then again it is Robert E. Howard.

Like you say, Howard packs a lot of American culture into these few pages. It's a mystical horror story.

There's an interesting side note about this story and the character of Doc Blaine. I read that Howard's father was a doctor and would have had to ride out to see patients in their homes like Doc Blaine. So it's possible that Doc's character could have some similarities to Howard's real life father.

Very true. In numerous of his stories, if there is a women who is beautiful and funny, then its likely Sonia Greene who was the inspiration, who was his girlfriend for the whole of his life. And yes, he loved American culture, he also references Celtic culture quite a bit as well.

The whole mysterious supernatural being thing, demonstrated through the supernatural Native American, is very HP Lovecraft inspired. You can tell they were massive fans of each other.

Novalyne Price Ellis was the name of REH's girlfriend.

Excellent points, wireman and edwardjohn. Agreeing on your posts. I found the story not horror, rather creepy with serious and realistic tones. Good Texas history and geography included. The author felt comfortable with his writings in this story. Good climax too.

Shall we return to Everything's Eventual and "1408" for the next group discussion?

Shall we return to Everything's Eventual and "1408" for the next group discussion? Yes, that sounds good. This should be interesting because I've read it once (when the book was first released) a long time ago and since then, I've seen the movie a couple of times.
