I like this story a lot, its very similar to the Blackwood short story, but that's to be expected, its essentially the same idea. I did not expect a story like this from HG Wells, but it was great. It reminds me of the generational thing that was going on in the Blackwood story, that the old folks know better than to dismiss the supernatural, but the young folk, being in an age of discovery, think of the supernatural as folktale, and are then proven wrong! Excellent story. My favourite part of it, "the timid wife had exacted revenge on her husbands jest for frightening her."

I enjoyed this story too. The story is masterfully told and is full of brilliant descriptions and imagery. It's a ghost story without a ghost, a kind of physiological ghost story. Wells manages to create a large amount of tension for a story without a ghost. The story tells us that fear will devour us if we let it. There are many great passages in the story and here is a favorite of mine describing the 3 old pensioners:
They seemed to belong to another age, an older age, an age when things spiritual were indeed to be feared, when common sense was uncommon, an age when omens and witches were credible, and ghosts beyond denying. Wells, H. G. (Herbert George). The Red Room (p. 9). Kindle Edition.
The story also includes a By Jove

Good story, very enjoyable. Yes, filled with description. Tension builds. Held my interest. Kept waiting for him to run out of matches. Fear plays on the mind t the max within the story.

Yes. he did seem have have quite a stock of matches.
Which was weird, because it didn't seem like he had a pipe with him.

I enjoyed this story as well. Really liked the imagery of the candles going out behind him as fast as he was relighting them.
I was a little put off by the fear stuff at the end though. It seemed a little bit of a cop out, because we EXPECT fear to be part of the story, about a haunted room. But it was a good story anyway.
