I like this story a lot. Reminds me a lot of Lovecraft, especially the story "The Electric Executioner", do a search for it, its a very similar story about a random person going insane and causing havoc. It hints at the idea of Steve going insane at the end, its a great cliff-hanger, and I will commend Steve for his ending on this occasion. What is Diane like though? Steve literally saves her from a madman and he doesn't even get a thank you! I wonder if it was Guy's wife who sent him insane.

Enjoyed the story-- it is brutal with a psychological ending. One quote struck me: Steve saying..... "But mostly it was Guy I thought about, lying sleepless through all the same nights I had lain sleepless, listening to the dog next door or down the street as I had listened to sirens and the rumble of trucks heading downtown."
And the Eeee at the end--- perfect expression to describe the entire situation.

I laughed at the joke about the all the maitre Ds speaking the same language of snooti.
I enjoyed this story. Did Steve kill the lawyer on purpose?
I think we all think of these kinds of scenarios where you can just be doing something normal and something crazy happens like being in a store when it gets robbed. You never know when you will find yourself in an extraordinary situation.

No, lets do a public domain one. Doesn't have to be this week, but I was thinking of suggesting an HG Wells one of these days. I don;t think we've done an HG Wells. I'll have to do a little research for a Wells story because he did different genres.
Where's The Kurb? He's been MIA for a couple of weeks.
We are open for suggestions.

I'm going to try something here that some of you might be able to use. I was on the guttenberg site where they have a load of public domain books and where most of our public domain stories come from. We always post the text here but you can get ebook copies from them. I downloaded the ebook version of red room in EPUB form which means you can read it on the books app that comes with i-phone and i-pad plus you can probably put the app on your laptop ect. Anyway I'm going to upload the file here and if anyone has an i-pad and has i-cloud drive, just save this file to your icloud drive and it should open on your phone or ipad. I'm just experimenting here, so I'm not sure if I can upload this file or not but we'll see.

Adding my late thoughts.
I don't really like this story. It holds your attention and everything, but it is so depressing.
Why did Guy go nuts? Over a dog barking? No, but that was the thing that pushed him over the edge. Did he have no one in his life who noticed? Who could help? Before he killed people?
And like in the Pets story, another wife leaves her husband with a note. She seemed to have a reason, she was blindly angry at him at the Cafe. So much so she never thanked him for saving her. I want to know what that reason is. I don't know why but I want to know.
I guess the story just is too close to truth these days. Like the guy who pushed the woman down on the train tracks in NYC last week. Total stranger, just runs up and shoves her down on the tracks. And he was watching for the oncoming train. You could see him watching for it and timing it out, when he was going to push her. Why do people do such things???
I also couldn't help but compare this story to Rage. Just in the ripped from the headlines way and how it is a little surprising given SK pulled Rage from publication, that he would write a kind of similar type story.

It kind of reminds me of the Alan Moore idea that it simply takes one bad day to go insane. I think Guy had probably been through hell prior to that and then he suddenly snapped. Its more of a cautionary tale, a bit like Rage, Rage is a cautionary tale.

I think the point of the story is just to show how we never know when we are going to be in a crazy situation.
I remember once when I lived in Denver, one night I was out with some friends at a movie theater and we encountered this whacked out guy acting weird as hell, talking to himself and just being completely bizarre. About a week later, I picked up the paper and saw this guy on the front page. He got on an RTD bus and stabbed a couple of people. This story reminds me of a couple of incidents like that where I thought I was lucky not to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Great story to demonstrate your point. I agree. I think its also saying that insane individuals don't exist solely in films, but they can even be our waiters.
