So the guy chasing Gary was the Devil I assume? So that would mean that he is Randall Flagg in the SK Universe? I love that a kid out ran Randall Flagg. I think this is a great story. Its a bit of a weird decision that Gary wouldn't tell his Dad what had happened, wouldn't any kid in that situation do that? Why was the Devil hanging around in a random forest though? Its does great things with suspense but there are a lot of unanswered questions at the end of this story.

Here's another story I appreciated a lot more when I read it a second time. Wow...Gary is sort of a hero to me because I can tell you that at 9 years old, I definitely didn't have the physical, emotional or spiritual courage to escape the devil. Not that I've met him or anything. But really --the devil not only smells weird and eats raw fish whole, which would be enough to freak out any 9 year old...he also tries to turn Gary against his own family , and make him doubt his parent's love , which is probably the worst way to hurt a kid, at any age. I don't think Gary gave himself or his parents enough credit for the inner strength he possessed. In my opinion, it was his upbringing--the love of his family that allowed him to hold it together instead of living in fear all those years after the encounter. I'm gonna be optimistic about the ending. I want to believe that even as a frightened old man, Gary would be able to escape the devil if/when he reappeared because he had lived his life secure in the knowledge that he was loved and he knew what was true and important in life. He might have been scared, but he wasn't weak.

The same thing happened when his dad wouldn't acknowledge to Gary what he thought when he saw the dead grass. I think they both thought it sounded crazy but they both knew it wasn't.

But Gary isn't even ten years old, he still believed that Santa exists (He does by the way , at that age I'm sure most kids wouldn't care if anyone thought they were crazy.

I've got a theory ... "The Devil" is the same species as Pennywise, the spider creature, that explains his morphing and his going after children. Also explains why he never went after Gary again.

Well, whatever name you want to give him, I think he was out to do more than just scare Gary. He was trying to un-do any sense of security the kid felt, and fill him with fear, hatred and mistrust of the people who were supposed to protect him. He wanted to destroy the kid from the inside out.

If Autopsy was a very good story this is a great one. And as i see it it is not Randall flagg or something like that. This is the devil. I think proof of that lies in SK own comments that what inspired was a friend of his description of someone who he was convinced was the devil( (the red eyes etc). Its very convincing, the devil says all the things that scares a child the most and says it in a way that makes him believe it. Your mother is dead and so on. The devil is, after all, known as a master in lying. This is the most credible meet with the devil story i read. And i dont find it strange that he didn't tell just as i dont found it strange that the children in it Didn't tell. Somethings a child don't tell his parents. Also we must remember the story is set in 1914 when kids garys age were not just kids but also workers on the family farm. We cant really compare gary to a nine year old of today. One interesting thing in the comments king wrote is that he didn't think it was a godd story and that he was totally flabbergasted by surprise when it won short story of the year. I also became very interested in the short story by Hawthorne that was one of the inspirations (written as a hommage to that story according to King) and in kings opinion one of the 10 best short stories written by an american ever. Made me wanna read that story that should be so much better in his opinion.

but there are a lot of unanswered questions at the end of this story. In the Afterward, Steve said that Young Goodman Brown was inspiration for this story. In both stories, the characters encounter the devil but other that's about all that's similar. Young Goodman Brown is about a man losing his faith but this story is open ended. I think this is a story where Steve wanted to pay tribute to National Hawthorne's story but didn't really have a point to make like Hawthorne did so he just left it wide open. He created this wonderful story and left the answers to the reader.

Sorry Folks but i had to remove the link to the "King in the black Suit" PDF.
It was uploaded on a private website and i don`t think this guy had SK's permission so this looks like copyright infringement.
Be careful with PDF's !

Like the idea of reading the inspiration story next week.
Thoughts: The story brought about great images and metaphors. Being older than most of the board, the debilities of older age hit home. The comparison of his body to a child's sandcastle soon to be washed away by the incoming tide. Wow.!
Being set in 1914, agree children of that era are not the children of this time. Fear to tell a parent, absolutely. Haunting memory of meeting the devil, and only 9.
Also agree this was the "devil". Not Flagg or other SK character.
Have always appreciated SK's open ended ending.

I found a PDF link by Googling but I did not see one in your post (weird) - was the Devil behind it?
This was a very good story - I enjoyed reading it
@kurben - I agree with your comments - you certainly have a way with words even if English is not your mother tongue
