I think John Lithgow was a convincing Jud. I would have loved to have seen the relationship with Louis done right with him as Jud, I think it would have played out rather nicely. it was strange to see him have the friendship with Ellie, but in a weird way it worked.
Now don't get me wrong, no one replaces Fred Gwynne, but I think Lithgow was one of the highlights of the new movie.

I agree with you, he did a magnificent job with his Jud. Gwynn did too! I loved him as Jud also. But really, neither of those actors were the Jud had in my mind's eyes and ears as I read the novel. I did appreciate and enjoy their performances though.
Lithgow's Jud really portrayed a more sinister type Jud in this one. A Jud more like what you talked about in your SKMB thread. Another great thread here JB. Thanks.

Yeah I still get the idea that he killed Church. The new Jud wasn't the friendly old man that the original one was, there was something else going on. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it would be interesting that the power of the Burial Grounds had more of a hold of him in this version.

Lithgow's Jud definitely was darker and made you very suspicious of him (and he made him much more like what you describe in your SKMB thread, applause to you). And yes, in this version you see the burial ground having a greater hold on him and driving his actions more. He still kept much of the kindly good Jud who lamented his actions and loved the kids/family) as well. All around Lithgow's performance was superb. He fit into the role better than I thought he would. I need to watch the movie again, I've only seen it once so far. I was a bit leery of this one, seeing how much it differed from the book, but I still enjoyed it.

I wish they had used the alternative ending. It would have made the movie so much like the actual story that it would be easy to forgive the changes.
