I know the universal question has always been what happened to Ellie Creed after the evens of the novel, but what about Louis? I know the movie tries to wrap things up by suggesting that Rachel killed him, but the book is less clear on what happens. In the book the scene stops after she opens the door.
So what did happen? Did Rachel try to kill him or did did she try and play the loving wife for a while, at least long enough to get Ellie home first? What happened when the firemen did rake the coals of Jud's house and found Gage's body there also?
Personally I think Louis was forced to to kill Rachel. Then after going mad, fled into the woods never to be seen again. That would lead up a very good reason of Ellie to come back when she was older, to finally have closure for what happened. And maybe her father is still out there in Little God Swamp...

I like your thoughts on, and speculations about, the "what if's" and "what could have been's", and "what might have happened's".
I think the ending to this story is another one of those that Mr.King leaves to our imagininations, it's open ended and he allows us to think for ourselves and come up with our own conclusions, endings. Great thread, will come back and post more. I hope others do too. Btw, have you read Bag of Bones and Christine?

I have indeed. At one time or another I have read all of Sai King's books and short stories. I always wanted to peruse the follow up to Christine, the fact that the car could regenerate as long as something was left of it.

You just made me feel a lot better about my crazy spiel and speculating in "His never ending fury" thread on the SKMB. Check that thread out sometime, you might enjoy it.
Back to Pet Sematary, I've got think about some of the possibilities of the of the open ending. I've always felt like Ellie was safe, and stayed with her grandparents.

But I also felt there was something that would bring her back one day, a need for closure perhaps. The power of the place might draw her back since she was the one who got away or maybe she'd come back on her own. I always felt Louis got away though, he was too valuable to the Burial Ground to just kill.

I hear you.....but thinking about how she never reached the Mic Mac burial ground, let alone participated in those bad burials, I don't really see her having that same "pull" , that thing that would draw her back there to it all. Remember, none of the kids who buried their pets in the children's pet sematary had that happen to them. Sorry JB, got to sign off right now. My tablet needs to be charged up, it's fixing to die. See you later.

It likely wouldn't have the pull on her, but the forces could arrange certain things like it did against Rachel. I guess it all just depended on how much it wanted to finish the game. SK never really explained just how 'aware' the powers were there. I never felt the windego was pulling the strings, i always thought it was just drawn to the evil.
