My mom had two green thumbs. She could poke a dead stick in the ground and it would grow. My brother's like that, too. His yard looks like a botanical garden. I kid you not. My sister can grow inside plants and they thrive for her.
I did not get that gene.
But being a homeowner with a fairly large lawn, I want to garden. Since my gardening skills are, unfortunately, on the same par with my cooking, it's a tentative thing. I don't know about mulch, laying down a black tarp as a foundation, weeding, feeding, what to plant with what, or anything involved.
Tall guy's grandmother just about yanks up half her garden every time we visit, so that I can take stuff home and plant it. I tried to explain to her that plants come to my house to die. I've got a black thumb. But she gave me a sweet smile, winked, and said it would be okay. And she was right. Her elephant ears get as tall as our little one-story house (they're about knee-high right now), and her Amaryllis came up to bloom this year, both in my front year and back. I forgot they were even out there. Then one day, there are these gorgeous red flowers. Yay!
So, encouraged, I bought some seeds for an Angel Trumpet tree, bought some miracle grow potting soil, and set them up in pots outside to see what happens. And I'm happy to say I have a few little sprouts. If they come in like they're supposed to, they'll look like this eventually:Wish me luck.
What's going on in your garden?

This is a cool thread. I think there is another gardening thread too, titled "In the Garden". I haven't looked in on it, in quite some time.
Not doing a lot gardening right now (other than raising some Basil), I've been working on clearing out weeds. Rearranging the stone borders around the Day Lillies and the purple Moses In A Boat. And always working on keeping the patio swept up and neat, and rearranging things out there too. Looking forward to seeing the peachy orange Day Lilies bloom. Yesterday was a yardwork day. Ground was still pretty wet and soft, so did some edging where it was needed, and worked on cutting out suckers that were growing at the bases of my Crepe Myrtles. Might do the mowing later this evening or tomorrow, when it's dried up proper.

Basil! Last year my Basil was awful, first time it happened. I think I went wrong by using pots with no drain holes. That was the only thing I did different. Someone told me I should not plant unless the plants I buy are t least 6 inches high. Having a hard time finding anything open that sells herbs and flowers. Maybe they will show up around the May holiday week end. What else are you planting wolf?

What's going on in your garden? I can relate lepplady. My 'skill' in gardening is VERY limited. I usually stick with petunias and some herbs -- basil, rosemary and a third kind. Try one different each year or try too. Good luck with yours, sounds like so far so good

I think this one's a bust. I'm not getting any sprouts. Some Succulents I planted are coming in, though. I've long considered having a succulent/cactus garden in a corner of the yard. With these coming in, I might just make that happen. I hope they make it to maturity. They're going to be stunning white with a green stripe.

(I think you have at last 75% green in that thumb, after seeing that picture). I'm still trying to find a Nursery that is open. One of the Nurseries here gave away all there florals. They got a list of Seniors in the area and left one on each doorstep until they were all gone, all 1200 of them. Gave so many a smile for the day.

Got a whole bunch of mixed seeds which I'm going to plant in pots then if they take off I'll replant them outside, there's Scented Stocks, Foxgloves, Lavender, Agastache, Echinops and Forget Me Not. They are all flowers to attract bees and butterflies and other pollinators. Hopefully it will work out.

Notaro
Sounds like you are going to have a very attractive garden there. Nothing nicer than the smell of lavender I think. There's lots of it around the city, makes a beautiful picture too.

Hey Alexandra, sorry it took so long to get back here. Just the Basil for now, later some parsley and cilantro. Things we use a lot of regularly. Not going to attempt oregano again for awhile, I'll stick with the dried. I got my raised herb box all weeded out, soil turned and going to throw out Basil seed, as soon as the soil temp reaches 73- 75F. A rule of thumb, if the soil is too cool it will stunt the growth of a lot of plants. Pepper plants in particular. Have a few Basil plants in pots, that I bought at the grocery store one of the last times I went. I'll probably end up planting them in the raised box too. Our rains have been pretty steady this spring, and I've been concentrating on getting the mowing done when it is dry enough to, before the next rain hits. This week should be dry.

Your yard/garden is going to look lovely, lepplady! That succulent is unusual looking, and very attractive. I have always used Miracle Gro, and never have I been disappointed. Please keep on updating us! WUITIIQGUyMrvFxIgkNw

Had to dismantle the bird feeder and take down any other feeding containers in the back garden, the mess created by the birds was attracting mice, had mice in the house a couple of years ago but didn't equate the mess outside with their appearance inside, sad I had to do it as I loved sitting in the back yard having a mug of tea a watching the birds flutter around

(an indoor one who likes to catch mice)
