I really didn't mind the changes they made to the story, it helped make it fit better with the original Shinning movie. The actors were great, the pacing was great. But what I didn't understand was why Abra wasn't Danny's niece in the movie. I felt that explained their connection well and gave another layer to Jack's story line. I realize the movie was long to begin with, but they already had Abra call him "Uncle Dan" in the movie. It wouldn't have taken much to explain this was a real thing. I feel like i'm nit picking, but the family connection was an important part of the novel. it could have added something more to the movie.

I kinda wonder that too but Abra was dark skinned in the movie, not white - do you think that is why they changed the plot a bit?

She was dark skinned in the book too. Really? Are you sure? I must have been looking at some pictures online of artist's rendering of what she looked like.
Thanks - I will go check my copy again
(it's been quite a while since I read Doctor Sleep)

I say they cut the “Dan’s yer Uncle” reveal because it’s just a stupid, fourth quarter story gimmick like ya see in soap operas and bargain basement PB originals. Like:
Kill me if you must, Daring Dan, but know you this—I’m actually your long lost half brother!
And we all roll our eyes and flip through the last ten pages. Sorry to Uncle Steve, but the Doc Sleep novel just fizzles out two-thirds through. The movie didnt.
And nobody needed another damn toy train ride.

Yeah, the Dan's your uncle plotline felt like "Laurie Strode is Michael Myer's sister" or "Anakin Skywalker made C3PO".
Very, "oh, it's a small world after all."
I didn't buy it.

Eh, its a bit of the Stan Lee school of writing. it hits harder when there is a family connection. Personally I was fine with it.

I liked the brother/sister thing in Halloween but they retconned it. As for Abra and Dan, I prefer them not being related. I still believe the Firestarter film remained the most loyal to the book when it comes to films based on his work. But I haven't read every book, while I've seen most of the films. Still need to read Trucks to see if it even comes close to being as campy as Maximum Overdrive.

lol trucks is much better than the movie Well I'm not surprised, I mean it was the 80's and campy horror was the route to go and it is a fun film, and I always found Emilio to be entertaining, and the actress who voices Lisa Simpson was amusing as well, she had such an annoying voice that at times I wanted the trucks to run her over but at the same time, I wanted her around to give her husband sh*t. There's an indie film just called Trucks that supposedly tried to be closer to the book but from what I've seen of it, pretty bad. Back to Doctor Sleep, I guess it doesn't really matter if Dan and Abra are related or not, its all about Dan showing he's the man and he really did kick a*s. Its easily my 3rd favorite, with IT being #1 and Firestarter is still #2 but I think its due to it being the film that introduced me to King's work, and I thought it was a solid film with a good score and the cast had great chemistry, which is the reboot makes me nervous. I guess it shouldn't, the IT reboot was better so maybe this reboot will equal to maybe better... but I just don't know.

Maximum Overdrive was the first thing I ever saw her in. She's good, like Debra Jo Rupp of 70's show fame.

Don't get me wrong, I love Maximum Overdrive. But it was not a serious attempt at Trucks lol.

Firestarter ... uggg. Not the novel, the movie. George C. Scott as a Native American government assassin! Drew Barrymore's acting had become incredibly self-conscious at about that time. So many good actors doing horrible work. The whole thing was ghastly. Even Heather Locklear couldn't save it! I'd watch it again, but money would have to be involved.
A friend of mine saw "Doctor Sleep", not a reader, and he said the Overlook was still intact in the film. Was it rebuilt, or never blow-ed up in the first place ("She creeps ...") ? I haven't read the novel yet. Or seen the film. But being a bit of a gif whor-, I found one for this post and have become somewhat smitten with the hat-girl actress! Whoever she is. What is that hat anyway? A boater, a trilby ... a pork-pie? Probably a pork-pie. Oh to be that pork-pie hat for just five minutes.

Go figure, I only like Barrymore in ET, Firestarter, and Donnie Darko, thought the rest of her work was bleh, and I liked Scott as Rainbird, and felt Locklear was the only flaw casting wise. She was only relevant for her looks, which didn't do it for me because I was never big on blondes, I prefer brunettes. I'd take Phoebe Kates from Gremlins over Locklear from Firestarter any day of the week. However, liking Firestarter the film more than the novel, I still am keeping an open mind when it comes to a reboot to see if they do improve on anything. But seeing as how they cast Efron, that's already a bad sign since he's a horrible actor. But some actors do get better. I didn't care for Leo all that much in Titanic, thought he was kind of goofy but then I saw Gangs Of New York and was very impressed. I heard good things about Gilbert Grape but I've never seen it, not my kind of thing really but one day I'm sure I'll watch it.

The only thing that didn't sit very well with me was Dan leaving their messages on the chalkboard wall the whole time. I wouldn't have done that. That Landlady or anyone could have seen that.

As I was watching it reminded me of SK’s short story “The Man In The Black Suit”. You get that vibe? Or is it just crazy me? 😊
