The bad news is that we have variations of the original virus. Some think that the vaccin wont be as effective on them. Sincerely hope not but we know that influensa vaccins only cover some strands while ineffective or not working at all on other flu strands. Its probable that this is similar. I have read about three variation, the british one, the southafrican one and the brazilian one.

I do volunteer work at a pet store/cat shelter every week and I straight up saw 3 adults walking around without their mask on despite the buildings policy but I'm not confrontational enough to try and be the voice of authority, especially since one of them was like a foot taller than me, to try and ask them to please obey directions. I got my dad an appointment for a vaccination. I've been trying for over a week and finally landed one today. There's a website you go to and basically get in line. The site is open for 1 hour every 3 days. I put dad on one computer and I got on another with the hope one of us could get an appointment for him (I'm not eligible yet). I'm glad I'm the one that got through. I'm not confident in his ability to navigate the website.

My friend got paid to be a human guinea pig for the vaccines, I signed up for a similar test but I haven't gotten word back yet on whether I was selected. If I do get selected I either walk away with some extra cash or perhaps experience some horrible side effects, but I'll take my chances.

Depends on which vaccine. Of course they work on the variants but some of them of them is less efficient. Where they are say 96% on the original they might be down to 85 or even less on the variants. That is the nature of virus mutations. A vaccine built for one strand does not necessarily work or work as effectively on other. So far we've only seen a few variants but it is likely to be more. The variants has proven that the virus can mutate into other versions. So the more it mutates the less likely is it that the original vaccine will be effective enough. I think its likely that we come to a point were we will need a new vaccine for some versions. Also a vaccine does not stop you from getting infected, that is getting positive result on a test, it just stops you from getting sick.

Dad got his first dose on Wednesday and doesn't seem to have had any side effects (and he's a side effect magnet ).

We got the phizer vaccine here at a local hospital.
Nobody had any side effects from the first dose.
On the third about half of us did and they varied from none to mild to extremely ill for a day or two.

Has their been any estimate of how long these vaccines are supposed to last once you've been vaccinated?

There has been a tentative estimation of about 5-6 months at the least but thats rather tentative since its so new. Many officials, at least in UK talk about it being likely that we have to take vaccines for a few years at least until the population can build up a resistance that lessens covids effect. It also depends on how potent the variants will prove to be. A possible scenario is that we, just as we today can get a yearly flushot, will have the oppurtunity to get a yearly Covidshot. The more people that take the vaccin the faster it will have a result in the population. Thats my take for whats it worth from what i read.

Good news-bad news. I got selected to make an appointment but there were no slots left in my county or a county near me. So, I have to try again Monday.

My country got a big load of vaccines that were going to expire in about a month. This one is not recommended for people over 65, so my husband and I were able to get appointments. 😁 And this is at a pharmacy instead of a mass vaccination site.
