In modern times, when we think of sensational or provocative novels, there are few topics which shock us. Perhaps, recently, Fifty Shades of Gray may come to mind. I'm wondering if you guys can think of any from publishing history. (Not smut, necessarily.) The Godfather and Valley of the Dolls pop to my mind. Peyton Place is another one.
What novels come to your mind?

I guess to one that springs to mind would be American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis, there was talk of banning it here at the time of it's release, I can remember some reviews called the book repulsive, disgusting and depraved and urged people not to read it. A buddy of mine had read it and I asked him what he thought, he said it was good so I bought it, I found it to be a wickedly funny book, yes there are sections that push the boundaries but I thought it fit in with the whole scope and context of the Bateman character. His whole persona is ludicrous and self absorbed and exaggerated so his actions are bound to reflect that. Just my opinion of course, I loved it but I completely understand if people were horrified by it. I also thought Christian Bale was superb in the movie adaptation.

I've only read the sample chapters on my Kindle. I liked the movie, too. Anyway, good choice. I hope others chime in.

Probably not applicable since it's nonfiction, but The Book of Matt blew my mind. It was a rec from another SKMB member and I think of it often.

Stephen King's Rage is the most controversial book that I can think of. After all, he took it out of publication because he was concerned that individuals would act on it.

Portnoy's Complaint - Philip Roth link Good to know. thanks! I missed out on reading that. I was 9 when Portnoy's Complaint came out in 1969 and my primary objective at the time was reading every Black Beauty book in the public library. I was successful in that ambition.

I guess what comes to mind would be the recent books by Margaret Atwood -- 'The Handmaid's Tale' and the follow up 'The Testament'. I started watching the TV series too this winter. Its a very good series but the books are much better.

I'm not sure why newer posts like this escape my attention. I try to be thorough.)

The original book of Psycho was controversial for its time. It's a pretty tame read by now, but we know what to expect from it now. Back in the day though I imagine it was mind blowing. Sticking to Stephen King, I always thought the short story Dedication was a little over the line for its time.

What a great topic. Lolita was certainly considered controversial for a long time. I’ll have to try to think of some others and look into some mentioned already!

Not a novel, but some of the books on Ed Gein shocked me worse than any novel could have.

I think one book that was extremely controversial was Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. About a middleage professor at an university and his infatuation with a 12-year old girl.
Another would be Lady Chatterlays lover by D.H. Lawrence. The story might seem as just the story pf an affair today nut then it turned the values of society upside down in england. Has been banned several times in several countries.

I think I saw that movie on Cinemax late one night... Well, read the book. It caused quite a scandal at the time. An upperclass woman having a passionate affair with a gardener!! Disgusting! And enjoying it!! Disgraceful! Nothing to wwrite a book about. Nowadays it is nothing really but then, oh, wow! If they ever made a movie out of some of Henry Millers books there ought to be a warning sign, Frequent sex ahead.
