This is difficult to process. A young guy I work with, he'd gone on vacation with his family to Florida this week, and apparently his brother committed suicide. He threw himself in front of a train! Over a girl I guess. And he was just 18. It's hard to grasp. We've all been hurt, but how does this kid do something like that? Shawn won't be back for couple of more weeks because of this, if he comes back, I wouldn't be too surprised if he didn't -- what will I say to him? G-d, can you imagine how his poor mother & father must be feeling? I never met the kid, but I know he & Shawn were working on a fishing podcast, and they were close. What a waste. And all over & empty-headed female. Sorry ladies. If the story's right anyway. How could you see that thing coming & just jump in front of it? It's hard to fathom.

Yes, this is hard to fathom, indeed.
My best Girl friend ever (my little Sister) threw herself in front of a Train when she was 16....probably, maybe it was an accident.
She was in the company of a Guy, i didn't know well, he died also this evening.
They were on their back home from a Disco and they crossed the railroads.
I knew she had a hard Life with her Parents and her Brother and she wasn't happy about Life sometimes.
Nobody knows, if this was Suicide or an Accident

Sorry to hear about your friend's brother - that must be heartbreaking for all involved. 18 is so young. All you can say to your friend if he ever comes back to work is that you are truly sorry. What a shock it must have been to hear this. (((((GWFB)))))

I'm so sorry to hear that, Grin Willard - (and about your friend, osnafrank)! That is going to be sheer hell for his family. All you can do it be there - offer a shoulder, a hug, take care of the pets for a bit, help with things they might not think of. Cry with them. Suicide is hard for everyone left behind. Even the girl. There's not a lot of help to be had after that heartbreak. Just give them all you can of you. Peace to all involved.

I'm so sorry Grin and Frank.
I agree with the others, "I'm so sorry for your loss", is best I think. Be available to listen and a shoulder to lean on.

I have just got in touch with a nephew that I have not seen for over 40 years, and found out that his daughter hung herself after her mother passed away. I can not even imagine what he went through.

Suicide is impossible to fathom because it just doesn't make any sense. When you're in that depression, it seems like the only possible solution though. I lost a good friend to suicide several years back and still can't really accept it even though I've had some dances with that devil myself. Just keep reaching out to those left behind and make sure they know they're not alone. Sending love your way. <3

It is always a sad thing to learn of the death of suicide. My goodness it is sad.

As other’s have said, “sorry for your loss” is sufficient. And please DO say it or something similar. Often when someone dies by suicide, and/or a young person dies, people are afraid to say anything. I have a friend who’s son died suddenly. Every now and then I would send her a message letting her know I was thinking of her, wishing her well, etc. I used to worry...what if she’s not thinking about him right now and I make her sad. But...he is always on her mind. As is my brother always on my mind.
do not say anything about the empty headed female not being worth it. As you said, that’s the story. Doesn’t mean it’s the correct story. By repeating it you may appear to be someone who participates in gossip. (I’m not saying you do. Believing what you hear is not the same as going around repeating it.)
suicide is rarely caused by “one thing” or even a “last straw”. Almost always it is caused by a severe depression. People rack their brains trying to figure “what did I do wrong” or “why didn’t he come to me”. But depression does not work that way.
