Sad if not exactly unexpected news. Jan Myrdal is dead, 93 years of age. He was a swedish cultural icon and regardless of where you stood on the political scale (and he was really left) he will be missed, for his books, for his almost allencompassing knowledge. He had a naivety in his nature that allowed him to be playful but also to make to be duped by cummunist China in the 60,s. I met him several times, he was a good friend of my father, and liked him. He had that rare ability to be at the same time divisive because he never agreed with anyone, he adored debate and thrived in challenging anyone if he saw a reason. And through the years he challenged the left , the right and anyone in between. When someone agreed with him he became suspicious. He always wanted to stand alone. He defended the right to speak ones opinion to the extreme and wrote fierce debate articles defending extreme right fundamentalists with really revolting opinions about jews, race and other things. He did not agree with them but argued that the day we start to make exception in the freedom of speech is also the day we admit that our society isn't a free society for all. But at the same time as he was divisive towards all political movements he was also highly respected, also by people who disagreed on almost every point. Also his books about growing up, mostly selfbiographical, is some of the best in the swedish language. He made an explanation of his thoughts in 1966 that is very typical of him. "Because the world around us is constantly changing that also means that if we keep the same opinions tomorrow as we do today then we have changed opinion. The truth i'm telling you today will be a lie tomorrow. If i'm faithful towards my friends i will betray them. If I, when striving towards a determined goal, when that goal is reached, keep it then i have changed sides". You never knew what he would say next but he was intellectually honest and always worth reading. I will miss him. RIP, Jan.

Alex Trebek, longtime host of Jeopardy and American Television icon, has sadly passed away today at age 80 from a longtime battle with pancreatic cancer.
My dad and I love watching Jeopardy together. And the saddest thing about this is, before quarantine, my dad auditioned to be contestant on an episode. Sadly, due to quarantine, he missed out on his chance to be on his favorite game show before this happened. Rest in peace, Alex.

RIP Mr. Trebek - I knew he was Canadian but I didn't know he was born in Sudbury, Ontario
Same cancer my Mom died from - looks like he tried his best but that is a terrible form of cancer - May he rest in peace
