That was good. I did not expect such a dark tale from Washington Irving. It's not only a dandy ghost tale but Irving is also speaking out against the horrifying Reign of Terror and that idealism to give his story a little extra. Gottfried realizes the errors of his idealism at the end. Interesting that there was no official ceremony for the wedding, Gottfried just declared them married. I'm not sure what that means other than maybe Gottfried feels he has the power of a God but I think it's a big deal for that time period so Irving did that for a reason. And a more gruesome thought is what happened on the wedding night with the corpse? The story is Poe-esque with the question of madness looming over the story.

A quick but entertaining read.
Lot of darkness packed into a few pages. The end is sad but keeping with the dark atmosphere of the rest of the story.
And yes, it has the dark, chilling feel of Eddie Poe.

Was totally surprised to see this from Irving. Absolutely the feel of a Poe story. Interesting , yet chilling ghost theme. A compromised student with extreme views and impoverished life, comes upon a corpse, marries it, basically goes insane. Fav quote:
"The fiend! the fiend has gained possession of me! I am lost forever."
