That was a grizzly tale of revenge. The author describes the village as a harsh place setting the mood for this harsh story.
The way the story is told, we don't know anything about the murdered son. Was he involved in criminal activity? Also, his murderer doesn't seem to have much fear of getting caught as he sets up shop in the open. The mother and son seemed to live a very isolated life.
On the surface, this story seems like a simple revenge story but when you start wondering about these characters, there seems to be a lot we don't know.

Short, dark and straightforward story about grief and revenge. You have to appreciate the willpower and fortitude of this grieving widow.
The description of the landscape, and also the houses “look like the nests of wild birds”, suggested to me that the author deliberately creates a scary and eerie atmosphere in the beginning.

A poor widow, her son, and their dog . Add a neighbor who kills the son. He escapes to another town. The widow seeks "vengeance" for the death of her son. Trains the dog to attack--vengeance. She returns home with the dog, unnoticed.
Totally agree, need more characters background would be helpful. Good short story. Background of how became widow; what brought about their poverty ; why did the neighbor kill the son?
