The Discussion for December 20 is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It's 77 pages so I gave us until Dec 20. Comment anytime you like.
The American Literature link is in 5 chapters so after you click this link, you have to click a chapter link.
Here is a link to Guttenberg.
I can't supply a pdf this time because it exceeds the 1 mb limit for attachments

😥 I just tried that link and it was ok for me. Not sure why you can't see it. Maybe clear your history. That sometimes does wonders.

I don’t think any film adaption has ever been able to match Dickens descriptions, when it comes to the spectral children ‘Want and Ignorance’. Nor the visions given Scrooge, of life without Tim. (You can just imagine the heaviness of poor Bob’s steps without the light, heart lightening weight of Tim on his shoulder, to lift his spirit and liven those steps and strides home.💔)
A lovely way to read this story, enjoyed doing that and having the illustrations to go with it. Thankee again Lady spideyman

A delightful read, and just right for the magical season. A true classic. And, once again it demonstrates how different a book can be from movies. I've watched several of the adaption movies ( some I liked better than others), but the saying goes-- the book is the book. Let the mind see the pictures of the words. Really enjoyed this story.
A Merry Christmas to all who participate in this reading group.

Like Wolf pointed out, there have been some fine film adaptations of this story but still none can touch the wonderful experience of reading it.
There's good lurking in everyone and even the worst can change for the better.
The story highlights social issues of the time like poverty, particularly child poverty.
I think Marley's ghost appearing first was very important to the story to make Scrooge's transformation seem believable. Marley was Scrooge's long time partner and only friend so what Marley had to say softened Scrooge up ( ) for the other ghosts. I think Scrooge never removing Marley's name from the business showed how Scrooge cared about him.

I've watched half a dozen, or even more, of the adaption movies, but like spidey has mentioned, the book is the book. The perfect read at Christmas time.
It has been more than a decade, since i last read this story, so i really enjoyed this read.
A lovely, atmospheric read, with a satisfying turn around of Scrooge. Maybe in modern books, this full reversal, would be deemed as corny, but Dickens did an excellent job of offering hope of redemption and betterment.
Kudos, Mr. Dickens, for a stunning story that touches the heart of each reader in its own way.
