17. One Missed Call (2003) (FTV)
One at a time, a group of friends start getting voicemails from their future selves that predict their impending deaths.
Somehow I’d made it halfway through the month without watching any Japanese horror (or J-horror, as the kids call it) so who better than Takashi Miike (Audition, Dead or Alive) to break the streak? One Missed Call was released in 2003 when cell phones were used for phone calls, texting, and not much else, and came on the heels of other successful J-horror such as The Ring. The movie feels like two movies, the first more of a standard thriller with horror elements, where we are wondering who’s gonna get it next, and how. The second half becomes more of a mystery ghost story, and the scares get more chilling and visceral.
That’s probably the main weakness of the movie, the two parts and story lines don’t really cohere, and by the end it’s not entirely clear why cell phones had to figure into this film at all. The middle section of the film is very still and quiet, and while I’m all for atmosphere and slow burns, the more rote police procedural elements left me itching for things to move along a bit faster. Still, the final 40 minutes are very effective in both the scares and story department, and without giving away too much, I won’t soon be forgetting the eyes of one ghost in particular. There were two sequels (not directed by Miike) and I’m interested to see where they take this story next.
By the way, don’t confuse this with the American 2007 version, which I haven’t seen but is apparently universally reviled (0% on Rotten Tomatoes)!

16. Nekromantik (FTV)
Man working for a human remains cleanup company literally brings his work home to share with his necrophiliac girlfriend, but falls into a downward spiral when he gets fired.
Made in the late 80’s in Germany by a director frustrated with censorship and ratings boards, Nekromantik doesn’t just push the envelope, it shoves it where the sun don’t shine. Lacking any kind of budget or actors who could, you know, act, the movie has the grainy look and feel of one of those “Mondo” movies of the 1970’s shot on 16mm. If early John Waters decided to make horror films, he’d have likely produced something like this, albeit with drag queens and a bit more obvious humor.
Although, I can’t help but think that this whole movie was intended to be darkly humorous, especially the “lovemaking” scene where the couple gets lovey-dovey with a gray, oozing corpse and the romantic music kicks in like some sort of made for cable softcore production. I mean, the guy sucks out the corpse’s eyeball and then lovingly spits it back into the socket, the girl supplements the corpse with the leg of a chair, how else are we supposed to take this? If we don’t laugh we may end up screaming, or at least gagging. (By the way, I snacked on beef jerky and a cheese stick during that scene and didn’t miss a beat). There’s also a scene where he goes to watch a fairly standard slasher and the whole audience seems bored out of their minds. Think they’re making a statement here?
Far less humorous is a scene (presumably, we hope, from a film archive) showing a live rabbit having its throat cut, blood drained, and then is skinned and eviscerated. This will likely trigger many viewers (my dad was an avid hunter and trapper, so nothing new here for me, although I detest animal cruelty). The scene comes without preamble and seems a bit out of place even in the context of this over-the-top film, but at the end it actually made a kind of sick sense and had some resonance. Is this art or trash? Why not both?
Not recommended for 97% of the public, so don’t blame me
This Movie was banned here and became an underground hit. Everyone talked about it, and wanted to see it, but it was hard to find. Found a copy in 1998, bought it, (for a horrendous price), and immediately made ten new "friends" when people heard about it. 😂👏🍿

15.) Nightmare (in a damaged brain) (FTV 1,5/5)
After killing his father and his father's mistress, a young boy is confined to a mental institution. Now an adult and troubled by horrible nightmares despite years of treatment, he escapes and goes on a killing spree.
(Very) low Budget slasher with some gruesome moments. The pacing acting and dialogues are terrible, the *cough* story *cough* thin, boring and nonsensical, the reveal at the end not worth watching this.

18. Hatching (FTV)
Pre-teen gymnast harried by her social media perfectionist mother finds an egg in the woods, and soon hatches (and bonds with) a monster.
This seemed like a non-A24 movie trying hard to be an A24 movie (alas, they had to settle for IFC). While there are some impressive practical effects (the monster looks like a creepy combination of Gollum and the Muppets’ Gonzo) everything is just too telegraphed and heavy-handed to make this movie really succeed. They might as well have hung a sign around the mother’s neck that said “BAD MOM” and put a label on the egg that said “SYMBOL OF GIRL’S INNER PSYCHE”.
The actors don’t seem up to the task, making cartoonish expressions when less would have done more. There’s an inconsistency to the young main character’s acting style and she is visibly older in certain scenes even though the events of the film are supposed to have occurred over a few weeks. I don’t think this director had much faith in the audience, so all emotions are spelled out for us in a more or less Kabuki style. Things get a bit unintentionally silly towards the end.
While the film looks great and moves along entertainingly enough, it’s insubstantial, simplistic, and entirely predictable. If they had put as much effort into the characters and story as they did the aesthetics and thematic elements, they might have had something special. But instead of giving us a whole feast, they played it safe and gave us a candy bar. But, if that’s all you’re in the mood for, you could do worse.

17. Totally Killer (2023)
An Amazon original horror/comedy. This is a cross between a slasher flick and Back To The Future. A high school girl travels back in time to the 80s to stop a killer that murdered her mom's classmates. Very funny. 7/10

21. “Santa Slay” 2006
Good cast! Except for F.D. Who was thankfully killed off before she could do any damage. 😊 Bad movie! ….naughtynaughtynaughty!
It was great! 😄
22. “Don’t Kill It” 2016
Dolph Lundgren , Kristina Klebe
Not as terrible as I thought it was going to be. 😊 One of our favorite Expendables plays Jebediah Woodley, a demon hunter in the swamps of Mississippi. The last time I saw something like that, Jean Claude Van Dammit was a Cajun with a Geri Curl mullet. 😂 Rubber bullets!? Vaping!? …..BadbadbadGunnar.
23. “Pet” 2016
Dominic Monaghan is as awesome as ever in this one. Awwww, this is such a sweet and special love story. 😊
Boy sees girl, Boy loves girl, Girl sees and dislikes boy, Boy puts girl in a cage, Girl tells boy to cut his finger off for her, Boy does it and girl loves him, Boy saves girl, Girl puts boy in cage. And they ‘collaborate’ happily ever after. 😊

16.) The Poughkeepsie Tapes (FTV 3/5)
New York homicide investigators find hundreds of videotapes of torture, murder, and dismemberment showcasing a serial killer's work over decades.
This is a found footage movie that is being analysed by homicide investigators, and it's sometimes very disturbing. Pure psychological terror, very little gore on display.

19. Evil Dead Rise (FTV)
Single-parent family accidentally resurrects the Deadites under their apartment in this fifth film of the Evil Dead franchise.
I’m a big fan of the original three Evil Dead movies, I haven’t had a chance to watch the television series but have heard good things about it, and I can’t really remember much about the 2013 reboot movie, but I didn’t hate it. I’d heard some good things about this movie but no one seemed to think it was a masterpiece either.
And after watching it, that’s kinda where I stand. I think actually in some ways this is better than expected for horror movies made these days. The gore is audacious, and they really do seem to be going for the jugular horror-wise, if not always hitting their mark. There is a sort of emptiness to the whole proceeding, and I miss the humor that was present in Evil Dead 2 and 3. This one seems to be going for the vibe of the first “serious” one.
There’s a wraparound story that doesn’t really belong, which leads me to believe they didn’t have confidence that the audience would put up with the more claustrophobic main story which is entirely set in an apartment building. The way the characters are introduced (or not introduced) can get a little overwhelming because there isn’t enough to differentiate the multiple female characters—I was often thinking “who is this person?” The sheer emptiness of this multi-level apartment strains credulity, especially when one of the residents towards the end doesn’t seem to have realized what was going on all night in the building.
Watch this one with some horror buddies and enjoy the gore, but don’t expect anything life-changing.

20. TerrorVision (FTV)
Monster from outer space gets beamed through television into the home of unsuspecting suburbanites.
How does one go about reviewing a movie like TerrorVision? It’s over-the-top campy and not intended to be taken seriously, so critics who simply write it off as “stupid” or “bad” are missing the point. Of course the characters are obnoxious and seem to be human cartoons, reality is decidedly not what they are going for in Terrorvision. So what were they going for?
For one, style. If you remember the 80’s and pine for the pastel colors of the Miami Vice era, look no further. Think Pee-Wee’s Playhouse combined with the fun of early Tim Burton. Another thing TerrorVision does right is practical effects. The main monster has a great (and drippy) physical presence that just isn’t seen anymore these days, and the attacks are spectacles in themselves. No one is safe.
Also, despite the characters being total caricatures, there’s a comforting familiarity with these old 80’s tropes: the Madonna/Cyndi Lauper fashion of the teen sister, her surfer-dude metal punk boyfriend named “O.D.”, the clueless inventor dad and the “hot” mom in her workout tights who fancy themselves “swingers”, the paranoid grampa living in his bunker, and the machine-gun toting kid raised on Rambo reruns. These people make Al and Peg Bundy’s family look like the Waltons.
Is it funny? To me it was hilarious, but the campiness might be wearisome to others. But the movie is only 75 minutes long if you subtract the opening and closing credits time, so maybe the real question you should be asking is: would you watch TerrorVision two and a half times, or Oppenheimer once?
3 out of 5 stars.

17.) Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (FTV 2,5/5)
In 1969, a young Jud Crandall dreams of leaving his hometown of Ludlow, Maine behind, but soon discovers sinister secrets buried within. Jud is forced to confront a dark family history that will forever keep him connected to Ludlow.
As it's own story, it is a decent movie, but i don't know if it's a good prequel. So, Jud devoted his life, to guard thes secret about the sematary, and then,20years later, he tells Lois how to bury someone there ?
It felt like i'm missing something, but i can't put my finger on it.
It was an okay film, with good cinematography, score and cast.

Two Evil Eyes (1990)
Two directors - George Romero and Dario Argento
Two modern Poe adaptations - Mr Valdemar and The Black Cat
Harvey Keitel stars in The Black Cat and Adrienne Barbeau stars in Mr Valdemar. Both stories are good but I think The Black Cat is the best. 7/10

His hope for a peaceful existence soon becomes shattered when he meets Abra, a teen who shares his extrasensory gift of the "shine." 20. Truth or Dare- 2018- Olivia, Lucas and a group of their college friends travel to Mexico for one last getaway before graduation. While there, a stranger convinces one of the students to play a seemingly harmless game of truth or dare with the others. Once the game starts, it awakens something evil -- a demon which forces the friends to share dark secrets and confront their deepest fears. The rules are simple but wicked -- tell the truth or die, do the dare or die, and if you stop playing, you die.

More movies I’ve watched lately 🙂…..
25. “Wer” 2013 A.J. Cook (Criminal Minds)
Very nice! A.J. Is an attorney in France defending a kind, sickly, docile and sad giant of a man, who has been accused of shocking and atrocious murders. During medical tests (the results of which will clear him) something changes. 😳
26. “Killers” 1996
Pretty good terrible movie! 😊 Psycho brothers escape from prison and take hostage an …’average American family’ ? 😳 And there’s a “Bob” in the basement. 😳
27.“Dark Shadows” 2012
A must see every Halloween! An all time Burton favorite. 😊❤️
28. “The Hoarder” 2015
Mischa Barton (Lawn Dogs), Robert Knepper😍(R.I.P.D)
Another really nice flick! 😊 This one I liked very much. (…the “food/water bottles” on the walls were telling. 😉)
29. “Bayou Caviar” 2018
Good cast! Really ‘horrorible’ when you discover what ‘bayou caviar’ actually is. Great job Cuba Gooding Jr. and company! 😊
30. “The Poughkeepsie Tapes” 2007
….sick, creepy and shocking. 😳 Everything Frank said it would be! 😄👏👏👏
Ewwww! The head in the corpse’s abdomen was awfully gruesome! Overall, yes, not a lot of gore in this movie at all, it didn’t need it. 🙂
There’s a lot to see in this movie’s various scenes. A couple of things I noticed in about the first third of the flick, that are probably just me, and not anything the filmmakers did intentionally 🙂….
1. The camera - maybe it’s just me but it kinda seemed like the erratic color fluctuations were significant. Not only because a possibly older and faulty camera was being used. A few times it appeared to me like that was the way the killer was ‘seeing things’, especially leading up to certain action. It reminded me of Ralph in King’s ‘Insomnia’ and how he was seeing the world around him through his sleep deprived eyes and mind.
2. The young guy, tasked with watching all the tapes - A few times he seemed to have a sort of eerie calm about him, and with that (especially when rewatching a vid with a group and instructor/profiler) an unblinking attentiveness….like he was possibly starting to get into the killers work. But like I said, all that is probably just me. 😉

18. Unfriended (2014)
A group of online chatroom friends find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend.
I thought this was pretty good although at times the way it was shot was annoying but it was also kind of awesome. The entire movie the viewer has the POV of being in a video chat so the entire movie, you're staring at a computer screen on a video chat as well as messaging. At first, I didn't like it but as I got used to it, I thought it was very well done but it is a little dizzying as the screen flips back and forth from chat to messaging to web site links. 6/10
