9. The City Of The Dead (1960) Christopher Lee
This is a good one. A college student goes to a small town in Mass. where witch turnings took place to do research. She discovers the witches are still there. A gripping and eery movie. The fog machine was working overtime in this one.

12. Skinamarink (FTV)
Minimalist nightmare gets under your skin without showing or telling.
It’s 1995, you’re four years old. You wake up in the middle of the night and something feels wrong, so you wander around the hallways of the house in your pajamas. It doesn’t take long for you to realize your parents aren’t in the house, leaving you alone with your little sister. Worse yet, the windows and doors have disappeared: you’re trapped inside. The flickering television beckons, playing old black and white cartoons on an endless loop. You realize there’s something else in the house, something terrible and powerful, and it begins to play tricks on you and your sister.
That’s the setup of Skinamarink. I will admit that when I heard about this movie, I was not looking forward to it and didn’t think I would like it. I didn’t feel like sitting down to watch must be a pretentious endurance fest. Every review talked about the glacial pace, the lack of story, the endless series of lingering shots of walls, ceilings, toys scattered on the floor, and not much more. People called it an “art film” or “experimental”, and also said it was outright pointless and boring, trying the patience of even the most tolerant viewer. Reviews were polarized, people either loved it or hated it. Even some of the more open-minded reviewers said didn’t really like it but admired it for what it was trying.
Not exactly encouraging, but I figured I’d give it a go. I’m so glad I did. I got sucked in immediately and fell into a sort of dreamlike state for the next 100 minutes. I didn’t fight the movie or let my inner dialog take over, I just let it play and went along with it. My guess is the people who respond most to this movie grew up with a sibling and remember the fears and helplessness that come with being a young child in a strange house. The style of the movie is not just a stunt, it’s putting you right inside the fragmented, barely developed consciousness of a 4 year-old who is just starting to make sense of the world around him. Images emerge out of the black swirl of background noise, barely formed.
Ever walk at night and think you see something out there, perhaps the outline of a body or face, only to realize it’s something else? Skinamarink puts you in that mindset, again and again. It denies the viewers the structure and comfort of conventional narrative elements, and those seeking spoon-fed answers will be frustrated. But it’s not trying to make things more difficult as much as using our desire for order and familiarity against us. Fear always comes from a lack of information. Skinamarink isn’t trying to entertain us with a diverting story, it’s trying to reach us at a more visceral, perhaps even subliminal level.
That said, I realize this is either going to work for you, or it won’t. I can’t argue with or try to convince people that they ought to have a certain reaction. I had my doubts and was pleasantly surprised that it worked for me. It’s not a perfect film, but it will likely be the one I’ll remember most this year.

10. When A Stranger Calls (1979)
A babysitter is terrorized on the phone by a killer while she's baby sitting and then again years later. The first 30 minutes of this movie is great. The way the tension slowly ratchets up with each phone call will put you on the edge of your seat. The first 30 minutes is a 10/10.
The ending is pretty good too but the middle drags. The entire movie is a 7/10.

2) Evil Dead Rise (FTV 4/5)
A reunion between two estranged sisters gets cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.
Great movie, not groundbreaking, but it was a fresh, new take on Evil Dead, contained plenty of the tropes from the original movies and had lots of respectful nods to horror of the past.
Entertaining, creepy, brutal and sometimes gross, and yes, a chainsaw was involved.
The cast was spot on.
No Bruce Campbell?

10.) Spiral (FTV 2/5)
Working in the shadow of his father, Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks and his rookie partner take charge of an investigation into grisly murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city's gruesome past.
I haven't watched a Saw Movie since part three.
This one isn't completely awful, it has an okay plot, but it felt more like a "good cop-bad cop" movie, than a horror thriller. There were four deaths and they didn’t come near as scary or gruesome as what were used in the movies i've watched. The acting is horrendous, and sometimes the film is just plain stupid.
"I recognize this building, it's the court house" on a sign that said court house on it. I thought the parts at the end with Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson (as his Dad) were pretty good; I'd have loved more of that.

Christopher Lee in Massachusetts? That's worth the price of admission in and of itself.

9. Cold Creek Manor- 2003-When filmmaker Cooper Tilson (Dennis Quaid) and his wife, Leah (Sharon Stone), tire of life in New York City, they buy a decrepit house in rural Cold Creek, N.Y., and move their family up there. However, soon the former owner, a menacing local named Dale Massie (Stephen Dorff), arrives. When Dale, who has just been released from prison, asks to be hired to help repair the house, the Tilsons agree. But soon Cooper starts believing that Dale may be even more dangerous than he seems. Whenever a city couple decide to buy a house in the country in a movie, why can it never just be a pleasant country getaway?

This one is new to me. Is it like Black Christmas? Somewhat. I think they are both based off the same urban legend. Awesome. Here's a fun fact for you: Steve Martin's favorite Christmas film is Black Christmas. There was an interview with the main girl in Black Christmas, who was actually quite a famous Shakespearean type actress, and she said that Steve Martin came up to her and said she was in his favorite film. She thought he was going to say the old Claudius film she was in, but he said no, its Black Christmas; its my favorite Christmas movie.

Catching up on posting what I’ve been watching 🙂….
6. “The Tank” 2023 This started out promising.
7. “The Boogeyman” 2023
8. “Skinamarink” 2022 Don’t drink that Kool-Aid. It has absolutely no sugar or jalapeño.
9. “When A Stranger Calls” 1979 Carol Kane, Charles Durning, Colleen Dewhurst. The first, the darkest, the best. (I wish NewCastle After Dark still had this one in their lineup)
10. “I Spit On Your Grave” 2010 I’m not recommending this to anyone. Thought it was just another Slasher Horror flick. It’s not. Apparently it’s remake of a cult classic. Very violent, but the violence is as well done as it can be. Not too much, not over the top, but graphic and necessary to tell the story. Not an easy watch, it keeps you watching because you have to know what happens next. There’s graphic gore, and same as the horrific violence it is well done and not over the top.
11. “Infinity Pool” 2023
12. “The Autopsy Of Jane Doe” 2016
13. “The Friendship Game” 2022 Another puzzle box type thing.

13. The Tunnel (2011) (FTV)
TV journalists enter abandoned tunnels under Sidney in search of a story about the homeless living there, end up finding something sinister instead.
Oh great, another found footage movie with an annoying female lead presiding over a group of male jerkwads. Oh look, she’s blinded by her ambitions to get to the bottom of the story and ignores all the warning signs and leads them to certain doom. Seems like someone saw The Blair Witch Project and said “Let’s do that, but worse.”
And worse it is. Worse acting, to be sure. We’re never convinced that we’re watching anything other than some low-rent actors going through the paces. They say things that real world people don’t say and react in ways that don’t seem quite right. Also, literally nothing of interest happens in the first 45 minutes. Why are they trying to get us to care about office politics, local politicians and the water shortage in Australia?
Worst of all, the format of the entire movie is told as a faux documentary where they’re interviewing the survivors. So we already know who’s going to live and who’s going to die. Whose idea was this? Don’t they know how suspense works? Every time there’s a potentially interesting development in the flashback footage, they cut back to present day with the interviewees sitting safely in a studio, sucking out all tension from the movie. The lingering tearful ending, which is apparently meant to be tragic, made me feel nothing. Am I a bad person for literally flipping off the lead character when she says “I feel responsible…I don’t want to say that it was my fault.” Yeah sure honey, go on telling yourself that.
They do get one thing right, and that’s to keep the monster/monsters vague—we don’t see much, and that works in its favor. But I get the feeling this was a happy accident brought upon by a low budget, not a deliberate artistic choice. I was surprised this film came highly recommended from quite a few horror fans, but to each his own, I guess.

11.) Evil Dead 2 (3,5/5)
The second of three films in the Evil Dead series is part horror, part comedy, with Ash once again battling horrifying demons at a secluded cabin in the woods.
Who's laughing now.,ah.. who's laughing now ?
Not really a sequel to "The Evil Dead, more like a remake. It's 80's, it's low budget, it's a masterpiece.
