“The Oval Portrait”
…..“Long—long I read—and devoutly, devotedly I gazed. Rapidly and gloriously the hours flew by and the deep midnight came….”
Another great Poe story of love, obsession and tragic loss. No one can do that like Edgar. Haunting flavors in it that bring to mind some of his other works, but also a bit of ‘Dorian Grey’. Really liked this tale. Great choice. 😊

Short, but fascinating and gripping. An eerie tragedy in a spooky atmosphere.
A tale of obsessions which comes at a terrible price..

Short and to the point-- obsession can have a tragic ending. Good story.

The painter is like a vampire as his work drains the subject of life.

The painter is obsessed with beauty while ignoring the person.

The painter is like a vampire as his work drains the subject of life. Yes, there were a couple of lines in there that made me feel like he was ‘painting her’ into the portrait. Her essence. ‘She’ was the paint in the paint. (that’s why it kinda reminded me of ‘Dorian Grey’) And it was like he wasn’t aware of exactly what he was happening until it was too late. His love and obsession for her, and capturing her on canvas became a vampiric act? His brushes and palette knives became his fangs? And she…his loving and willing prey.
(…..it’s probably just me, I know. 😊)

Edgar, you’re so good at these things. 😊 ….I wonder if on finishing, he contemplated opening another bottle and continuing on with HIS ‘painting’ more. Having the art loving reader in the bed become more and more enthralled with the Galatea in the oil, praying Aphrodite to take pity and bring his new found obsession back, before he wasted away like Narcissis on the river bank. But no. Not Allen Poe. He would know when to stop, and not add too much to what was already a perfect piece of art. Less is more. Very often. 😊 (alright, that’s enough Red Bull for me this morning. I’m getting those wild racing thoughts over coffee time again. …badwolf.)
