This is a funny and romantic story but under that is also a story of hard times and difficulty finding employment. Maybe a comment on how difficult it was for women to find employment in the early 1900s as Sarah ends up working for meals. The O. Henry imagery is amazing. Some of the menu descriptions were hilarious like this one:
The gracious spirit of Spring pervaded the entire menu. Lamb, that lately capered on the greening hillsides, was becoming exploited with the sauce that commemorated it's gambols.

What a delightful story. Indeed funny and romantic. Happy ending, bravo. The 1900's was a difficult time for women via education and workforce. Jobs and education opportunities for women have improved, but need to equalize. Excellent story!
